I know that palpitations are generally not too serious, esp. if you know you're stressed out, but I recently had palpitations that started out severe, then gradually declined over 4 days. Now they're gone. Is this something to take to a cardiologist, or am I being a hypochondriac?

You really need to see your Dr., have you ever had your heart problem checked out? If you're having palpitations on a regular basis and it's really a rhythm problem that could be very dangerous, you could go into a rhythm that could cause you to pass out or worse. All sorts of things caffeine, stress, hormones, or even an underlying thyroid disorder could be the culprit, so please go to the Dr. It is very easy to treat if it's nothing serious, and vital to treat if it's more serious. Also keep track of when you notice them, what you're doing, where you are, how you are feeling, etc... Good Luck to you. Now go call the Dr.

Me Me,

While heart palpitations in healthy adults every once in a while are not generally considered serious, at this point (four days) I would strongly recommend seeing your family practitioner to have an EKG done and a possible referal to a good specialist in your area.

You may also be experiencing anxiety.

In the mean time, cut down on caffeine if your intake is substantial.

Best Wishes

Check how fast your heart goes, palpitations can be related to stress and or hormones....Be sure to drink enough water, a fast heart rate is a different story. See a doctor fro heartrate over 125. Check out source to educate yourself more.

Make sure that it's just a mild heart murmur like mine. I have this happen sometimes when I'm stressed. Sometimes when I don't know I'm stressed. I think that hormones affect it too. Make sure you're taking good care of your body.

Go to your regular doc & they can do some simple tests to start ruling things out.
Save the cardiologist's time(and your money) for later. Your doc will refer you if necessary.
