A friend of mine was telling me that her longterm partner had got crabs. he said he must've picked them up while sleeping at a friend's house from the bedding.
She seemed to think this was fair enough but am I right that this would be extremely unlikely? You need to have close contact with another person carrying them surely? I know that body lice of any kind live for very little time off the body/ head with out heat or food etc?
This is what I thought to be the case. If so, should I put this to my friend? She would be devastated if she thought he had cheated on her.

Specifically, he said he stayed in a spare room at a male friend's house ALONE in a bed.

I understand they live on bedding, but surely if the bedding was freshly laundered and put on a bed that had had noone in for a good few days at least, how could a human lice survive that long?

Pubic lice are usually spread through sexual contact. Rarely, infestation can be spread through contact with an infested person's bed linens, towels, or clothes.
This information is from the CDC so I don't think that you should tell your friend what you're thinking because he could in fact be telling the truth.

You know, 'crabs' you can actually see, and if you have them they itch REAL bad. How long had it been that he slept in this bed and they never itched? Hmmm. If someone had a bad case of crabs and slept in a bed (naked), I don't see why a couple crabs couldn't fall off of him or her and wait for someone else 'naked' to come along. One thing I know for sure, they do hang on tight and stay at the root of the hair to lay more eggs. So,I don't know what to tell you about your friend, but I would wash my linens and toilet seat often. About telling her, I suppose you could wait till she caught an STD or worse. Find some literature on it and leave it at her place.

Crabs CAN be spread from infested bedding, un-washed clothing, towels or toilet seats! It's not the most common way (sex is) but it definitely occurs. My college roommate caught crabs, then angrily accused the guy she was dating of infecting her. HE, in turn, told her he had none and got mad that SHE had probably infected HIM! After all that, someone in the dorm posted an anonymous message that she had crabs and no doubt, a few girls got them from using the toilet seat she had used!

So, take his word for now...but keep an eye on him, just in case he was NOT telling the truth!

Your information is flaud! Crabs can be obtained from simply sitting on a public toilet seat infested with them!
As for lice, they too can jump from one person to another. Schools have found that when one child came to class with head lice, the entire classroom of students became infected.
Sounds more like a "cheating" paranoia!

actually crabs can be caught much easier than you think. My husband and all his brothers caught it he was 11 from his cousin that had stayed the weekend with them and slept in the same bed. I dont know how likely that is but i know it can happen.
