I will be asleep and wake up gasping for air like I wasn't breathing for a while. Has this happened to you and do you know why this happens? Do we actually stop breathing? This has only happened maybe a couple times a year but was just wondering.

YES, this does happen to me too! It's usually the cause of sleep apnea. If you suspect you may have please get your doctor to order a sleep study. Sleep apnea causes you to stop breathing several times during the night, and when you wake up gasping for air, it's your body trying to wake you up to breath again. You'll experience a lot of daytime sleepiness, waking up like you haven't slept at all, and loud snoring. Not just overweight people get this, skinny people with recessed chins have it also.

I have the same problem, but it will also happen when I'm totally asleep. For me it's very scary. It's kind of knead dreaming I was drowning and woke up only I wasn't dreaming of that. I'm sorry I don't have any advice to help you, all I can say is your not alone.

You need to see your doc as this is consistent with sleep apnea. This can be serious so see your doc and let him help you figure out what is going on.

I don't know your history or age, but if you have heart failure this can be a symptom called paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea. In heart failure, it's caused by fluid filling up in the lung while you sleep, diminishing your abilitiy to breath. Common with heart failure, but can be caused by other conditions as well.
