With such an intimate gathering of loved ones just setting up an atmospphere and having good food would be great. Break out the good china and make it a quasi-formal gathering with a classy take on his favorite food and pair it with some gooood alcohol. You could always go to his favorite restaurants and get party platters of his favorite things if cooking isn't your forte. Also, you can require all the guests to write little things about him to be recited in a toast (so get some good champagne!)

It really does depend on your friend--if it were up to me and I was having my 27th birthday, this is what I'd like (with a little bit of karaoke thrown in--nothing like a drunken birthday boy in his best formal wear singing a rousing rendition of "Welcome to the Jungle").

If he is turning 27, then the peak of his teenage years was in the 90's. There were so many music genres and fashion do's (and don'ts) that emerged in that decade. Sooo...my suggestion is to throw a 90's party. People can show up in flannel and ripped jeans (grunge) or in whatever they wore as teenagers. You would be surprised how many people hold on to that stuff. You can also play all 90's music.

Rum punch is OK, but I think a big party bowl would be neat, too. Be sure to add fruit so you can have some real hooch. Good luck!

Being 30, close to his age. The only themed party I would go to other than dressing up for Halloween would be for a pimp and ho party. A themed party doesnt work well with 5-6 people. If you want to keep it small you should get some of his music and maybe have a bonfire and enjoy the good times.

I suggest an "Island" theme. Give everyone cheeseburger hats. (I hope you understand what I'm talking about. If not, search "Cheeseburger Hat" on Google Images) Play all reggae music, of course. Make jerk chicken. The recipe for this is at the source below. Here is a recipe for rum punch below, too. For desert, bring anything, really, chcocolate cake is always good. Just buy a store-bought mix. Also, for decoration, try your hand at carving fruit such as melons on pineapples. Carve faces into them for an "Island" theme. Good luck! I hope it's lots of fun!

I did a 80's party for my hubbies 28th Bday. We all dressed in 80.s, and played that eras music. We also made trash can punch.

One 30gal trash can (a clean one)
Sliced fruit )oranges, apples, watermelon. any fruit that you like)
10 ga;;gallons of Hawaiian Punch
4 bottles of vodka

Mix all together and serve over ice
After the punch is gone, you can eat the fruit, just be careful, the fruit will get ya way drunk.

with 5 or 6 people you can make a Ti (tea) Punch (cocktail of Martinique). Each glass gets a Splash of Petite Canne Sugar Cane Syrup (which you can find at Binny's or Binny's.com) Rhum Agricole Blanc (I recommend La Favorite Blanc) and juice of half of lime stir add ice. Enjoy the taste of the French West Indies.

Good Luck!

Have a poker party. Get black and red balloons, plates, bowls, napkins. Pick up a few decks of cards and some dice come in handy. Go to any toy or game store to get some poker chips. Not sure what kind of budget you are looking at but I've seen lots of cool glasses and dishes that have hearts. diamonds, clubs and spades on them. You could make the food as easy as fresh veggies, dip, pretzels, dry roasted peanuts, and pizza or you could serve a half dozen fun appetizers. You don't have to go crazy with the drinks since it's a small group, just serve one or two mixed drinks or find a good punch recipe online to use with rum.

A fun decorating ideas. Use your computer and scanner to scan in some face cards(king, queen, jack, joker) and then use photoshop to put your friends faces on the cards. Print them out on 8 1/2 by 11 paper and hang them up. Could also decorate with fake money/game money. You could also put your friends face on the dollar bill and print it and put on table. At our party we used a hole puncher in fake money and tied them to the helium balloons. get a couple scratch off tickets as party favors.

Have fun planning!!!
