Albuterol is ordered for patients with a restrictive problem. Pneumonia is mainly an obstructive problem. When there is no wheezing, oxygen saturation is good and breathing is not labored, then there is no need for Albuterol nebulizers! Also, most patients present with no history of COPD in these cases.

I too am a Respiratory Therapist. For the most part, it just makes the patient and the family of the patient feel better. Although it doesn't help with the pneumonia, it does open them up and make it easier to breathe for a while. Doctors are slightly smarter than RT's too!!! So, I just do what the doc says, and get back to surfin the internet. Plus, bronchodialators are given for obstruction problems.

That's interesting, I always thought when you had pneumonia, Albuterol could help open up the airways so you could cough out the mucus in your lungs. Could it be that the doctors might believe the same thing. But I have searched and found no recomendations for albuterol for pneumonia. I wish someone could give a real answer to this.

Um, no you are wrong. Albuterol is given for obstructive problems. What is Asthma? Obstructive. What helps asthma? Albuterol. Lots of Pneumonia patients wheeze and have swelling, and that's why the 'junk' can't get out of their lungs. Albuterol and CPT help.

most patient's that have pneumonia use albuterol w/a nebulizer machine. albuterol breaks up phlegm in the bronchial passsages to make it easier to breathe. you don't have to be wheezing or have a low oxygen saturation to get albuterol prescribed. you do need to have a history of conditions like copd, asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, emphysema, ect .ect to get a prescription for albuterol though.
