Hello, I live in Michigan and would like to purchase Oaxaca cheese. Unfortunately I cannot find it anywhere and would be willing to order it online, but I have only found 1 place that sells it and they want to charge 20 for a lb to ship it here. Please let me know if you know of any Mexican Grocers that would sell it. Also, I have seen a substitution available called Quesadilla cheese, is this the same product? Please help!

Whoa, Nellie! $20 a pound! I live in Mexico City and we pay anywhere between $1.70 to $3.00 per pound! That is CRIMINAL! And No, "Quesadilla cheese" is not really a good substitute, (unless you want it for quesadillas only and even then, not the same!)

Look, I wish to God you could send me some good old-fashioned sharp cheddar (so hard to find down here!) and I would send you the genuine Oaxaca cheese, (unfortunately not practical!)

I did find a couple of things, Southwest Detroit is filling with "latinos" I'll bet you could find some Mexican markets in the area, or look on the net in that area. I did find one place in Michigan which is BOUND to have it:

Mario’s Meats ( a Mexican market and deli), 2524 Dixie Highway, at the corner of Silver Lake Road, the first traffic light west of Telegraph, Waterford. Call 248-673-9723

Hey, good luck and good hunting............

Check for a local Mexican grocer near by or Trader Joe's. I live in California and they have it in just about every store I've been into. Even Trader Joe's. We also have a few Mexican grocery stores in town. If you can't find it, I would use mozzarella instead. They are made the same way. You could also substitute Monterrey Jack. It's similar to it when it's unaged. Try looking for it as these names instead: asadero or quesillo in the regular chain grocery stores.

Do you have any speciality Mexican food stores in your area? They may carry it. Or check with your local Mexican restaurant. They would know best where to find it at the cheapest price.

Most Walmart supercenters carry it. If you can't find it, you can use Mozzarella as a substitute.
