Tell her that it's normal to feel horrible and like her life is over, but it's DEFINITELY NOT OVER. Tell her that it can be tough for the first year or so (emotionally and physically), but that it will gradually get better. She might be feeling like she is damaged goods and that no one will want to be with her when they find out, but that's not true, either. A friend of mine went through the same thing, and she is now married to a great guy (and he doesn't have it). When they were dating, she was terrified to tell him about it, but he was totally fine with it because he loved her. Plus, condoms and certain medications can reduce the risk of transmission. You might also tell her that she is not alone and that it is an EXTREMELY common thing--about 1/4 of all Americans have it, though many are asymptomatic, so they don't know it. (Which is why it is spreading so rapidly. People have it and don't even realize it because their symptoms are so mild.) You can also tell her that she can still have children and there's no need to worry--the anitbodies she will have built up to the virus will protect her unborn child during dilivery. (plus, if she is having symptoms at the time of delivery, a c-section is an option) Oh yeah, and that friend dated a few guys before she married her husband, and not one of those guys rejected her when they found out about it. She will be okay, though it might be hard for her to believe right now.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

Tell her that she doesn't have to worry about what she has. There are millions of people that has this life long condition just like her and that means she is not the only one. Men will not dislike her b/c she has it and she must tell them when about to do it. Always were a condom and for safety perposes make the man take a shower. A man that will think that she is nasty is very shallow and needs to be shot. She will be okay and she will get use to her condition.

A) a lot of people are misdiagnosed
B) it's not a huge deal, it shouldn't affect her life like a fatal illness would.

Say nothing unless you plan on having sex with her or unless she discusses it with you first. Otherwise, it's none of your business and doesn't effect you.

Nothing...continue to be her friend and do not discuss it with anyone.
