Fugu, the Japanese Blowfish. It is a delicacy in Japan, served raw as sushi. If the sushi chef doesn't cut it just right, it releases the deadly neurotoxin, called tetrodotoxin, into the meat, killing the victim. The poison is concentrated in the liver, ovaries and intestines of the animal. The Blowfish is immune to its own poison. It acquires the toxicity by eating other animals that contain the poison, such as shellfish. The shellfish acquire the toxicity from the same algae that cause red tide.

To say that all wild mushrooms are deadly would be the same as saying that all wild berries are deadly, which would, of course, include blackberries, raspberries, thimbleberries, salmon berries, etc. The two most deadly mushrooms are the Death Cap and the Destroying Angel. Many cultures harvest and value wild mushrooms. It is typically American to be mycophobic.

Fugu. Japanese puffer fish. In Japan, there is an expression says that "I want to eat Fugu, but I don't want to die". You can imagine how it is deadly if you know that only licensed cooks are allowed to prepare Fugu in Japan .
