My best friend of over 35 years was in a critical accident and was in the early stages of recovery on her birthday back in September of 2006. We live about 5 hours away from our classmates that we still keep in touch with and we are giving her a belated birthday party here at my house. My friend thinks she is attending a Valentine party here. My question is: I am going to get a birthday cake and put up banners in her honor but do you think I should put candles on the cake and have everyone sing happy birthday since it was so long ago or should we just set the cake out with a nice saying on it and serve it at the end of the evening? I wasn't sure if it would seem silly to sing happy birthday since it was quite a while ago and thought maybe just by her knowing the party was in her honor to celabrate her life would be sufficient. What do you think?

Hard to answer without personally knowing her. If it was me being honored, I'd be touched by candles and singing. It would let me know that I was not forgotten and am still loved. Don't forget the presents! Good Luck.

Honestly It wouldn't be a birthday party without the candles! I say go for it and watch the smile on her face! She probably felt like crap knowing it was her birthday, and for you guys as friends to throw her a belated party would bring joy to her face as well as tears! She'd appreciate it!

Personally I think singing happy birthday to her is a wonderful gesture. It lets her know you were thinking about her then and now and who isn't cheered up and touched when they hear the birthday song!
