I came down with a cold at the end of last week, I also have mild asthma, been coughing and wheezing, I only have a blue inhaler which doesn't seem to be helping much at the moment. I can't get into the doctor's til tomorrow morning, but I'm at work at 5 tonight and I really don't want to call in sick as first day and only a 2 and a half hour shift. However I'm going to be speaking to people on the phone so really could do with not being bunged up! I'm using vicks the vapo-rub and the sinex spray, got lemsip cold and flu tablets, beecham's chesty cough syrup, lozenges, have been steam inhaling and drinking honey and lemon, does anyone have any suggestions I haven't tried? My boyfriend thinks I just shouldn't go to work and wait til I've seen a doctor, but I really don't want to miss my first day.

Sorry to hear you're feeling so rough. When you can see your doctor and ask about the brown inhaler called Becotide. It's a steroid preparation used in conjunction with the blue inhaler. The blue inhaler treats the wheeziness and works very quickly, the brown inhaler acts as a preventer and is very effective.
Regarding your cold, next time as soon as the cold symptoms begin, use Vick First Defence nasal spray. My wife and I used it recently and it really works. It prevented that horrible 'face ache' feeling in the sinuses and shortened the cold by about 3 days. In the meantime use Olbas Oil in hot water as inhalant, it help the breathing.

Doesn't sound like you should go to work - not sure if people want to hear you coughing up your lungs anyway.
Most of the things you are using will not really help with the cough. Most over-the-counter cough medications won't help either, at least in the suggested doses. However, taking too much of those containing dextromethorphan (the DM in Robitussin DM for example), while likely will help with the coughing a bit, will make you feel very spacey and probably not function well at work. Not to mention with asthma, most of these medications would not be recommended and you would be better off coughing out the mucus and phlegm.

Honestly, I think you should go in to work today. It will show a sign of dedication for the position . Let your boss decide if they want you in for the day.
Remedies:
Everything you have listed is great! I too have asthma and upper resp. issues. Try some green tea with echinacea, and REST as much as you can.
