Do you have a fever? There is a really nasty chest cold/virus going around that starts like that then turns into bronchitis, you just have to be careful it won't go into pneumonia. I used to be a pharmacy assistant and I have to tell you, the over the counter cough syrups don't work, they don't really do anything but let you think they are helping. You probably need promethazine with codeine to break up the cough and help the pain when you cough but you'd need to see a dr for that and also maybe an antibiotic.

Since it's the weekend and holiday one at that, try to rest all you can, bundle up make yourself sweat, sweating helps rid the body of virus and breaks a fever if you have one, make sure you drink a ton of fluids, a glass of water or liquid every waking hour and have a water glass by your bed for when you get up to use the bathroom at night. Do you have a vaporizer? You need a hot water vaporizer so you get the steam, if you have one, use it, keep it on the next 2 days steady and stay in your room with it. If you don't, take a moist hot pack, heat it in the microwave and lay it on your chest, if you don't have a hot pack, then use a moist towel in the microwave for 30-60 seconds depending on your power wattage of the microwave you will have to test it to see how hot it gets. Put the warm pack/towel on your chest for 10 minutes of every hour, also take a cup or bowl, fill with water, heat it in the microwave or on the stove, sit with it in front of you, put a towel over your head and lean over it, you want to breathe the steam, you need to break up the gunk in your chest. Do you have anything menthol? mineral ice, vicks, any rub pain relief meds? Put menthol on your chest, rub it in. Also, cough drops, Robitussin orange vitamin C, they taste good, have a touch of menthol in them, plus you get vitamin C to help fight the virus. That will help you until you can see a doctor, and maybe by doing this you will break it up by Tues and not need to see one.

I can't diagnose but it sounds like the bug going around, the bad chest cold turning into bronchitis. If you spike a fever 102 or more go to the ER immediately as you could have pneumonia.

I think you probably have bronchitis, an inflammation of your bronchial tubes which lead from your trachea (windpipe) down to your lungs. It will make you not be able to stop coughing and your chest will feel raw inside, that's the burning feeling. None of the OTC products will really work, I got some cough syrup with codeine from my doctor. That knocked me out so I could sleep. Make sure to keep yourself hydrated, and see your doctor. Hope you feel better soon!
