I understand that it puts moisture in the air, but what exactly does that do and what else does a humidifier do?

WITH THE HEAT ON IT DRIES OUT THE MUCUS MEMBRANES AND MAKES THE BODY PRODUCE MORE MUCUS. WITH THE ADDED HUMIDITY IT SOOTHS THE NASAL PASSAGES AND ALSO YOUR BREATHING. YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT THE HUMIDIFIER IS KEPT CLEAN AND USE DISTILLED WATER. DO NOT PUT AD DATIVES IN THE WATER.

If you have a dry scratchy cough, that's frequently caused by dry air so a humidifier will help you sleep at night by putting more moisture in the air. If you have what a doctor would call a "productive" cough, in other words, chest congestion, you really need some type of expectorant to help you clear yourself out. Robitussin usually works for us, tastes really nasty but it does the trick. Hope you feel better soon!

If the air you are breathing is too dry it can irritate your throat. And a humidifier puts moisture in the air, so when you breath in, it won't be dry and irritable. I have one with Vicks Vapor in it and it is the best humidifier I have ever had.

lots of night coughs are caused by dry throats...a humidifier may help by, as you said , putting moisture into the air..but theres also those vaporizer thingies..you put hot water in them and plug them in and it creates a mist thats great if you have a cold or cough...theres even a spot where you can add a little vicks vapor rub that will be mixed into the mist the machine creates and help it even more..id say that would be your best bet
