Your body needs some cholesterol (it 'lubricate' joints and bone movement) just not in the excessive amounts that we get in.

Cholesterol is actually a vital part of our cells' membranes and is used to make many different hormones in the body, so, in small quantities, it is essential for life. However, our body is perfectly capable of synthesizing and recyclicing all of the cholestorol we need to live, so we don't actually need to eat any.
In large amounts (such as the amounts contained in a typical western diet) cholesterol can help cause heart disease and strokes (amongst other things, but those are the big ones).

Of course it is !!!

You need it to live. Cholesterol is:

-one essential component of cell membranes
-the first precursor of all steroidal hormones (androgens, estrogens, glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids)

It does NOT come from you eat, but is mainly produced by your body itself, from a molecule called lanosterol. Lanosterol is also the precursor of vitamin D (which is produced when UV light touches the skin).

What is meant by "high cholesterol" is actually an unbalance of LDL (low density lipoprotein, "bad") vs HDL (high density lipoprotein "good"). Cholesterol is a COMPONENT of those, and both are necessary for the good function of the body. A surplus of LDL will stick to blood vessels and harden, which will cause coronary disease.

The majority of the cholesterol in your body is made by your liver, you need it for cell repair and growth.
There are three components to it:
LDL or bad cholesterol which diet and meds reduce
HDL or good cholesterol which you want high to help with LDL reduction it's a ratio thing
Triglycerides which you want low too, weight loss reduces this.
So yes some cholesterol is good for you

Broadly, Cholesterol = HDL + LDL + Triglycerides

High Density Lipoprotein also called good cholesterol is useful.

Low Density Lipoprotein also called bad cholesterol is harmful beyond a certain amount.

Triglycerides are harmful beyond a certain amount.

there are 2 types of cholesterol, good and bad. the good cholesterol is known as high density lipoprotein, or HDL. it helps your body use energy more effectively. The bad cholesterol is known as low density lipoprotein, or LDL. it clogs the arteries and sticks to the interior of the heart, which can lead to heart attacks.

I think that HDL (the "good cholesterol") helps your body remove LDL (the "bad cholesterol") from your body. So I guess you could say that some cholesterol is good for you.
