Depends on how you prepare the tofu. If you first deep fry the tofu, it'll go great with the oyster sauce. Just flavor it sparingly though as a little goes a long ways with oyster sauce.

Not with oyster sauce but with Salsify sauce and it was Yeck...
Some tofu is good and some is yeck.. Keep trying them till U find the good one.. don't expect it to be like cheese cause it's not cheese!
Best way to have tofu is with a little nutmeg and a hint of jalepeno.. for colouring sprinkle on
some paprika.. Serve with dish of perogies or
baked potatos! Add a side dish of mushrooms.
If you want to be fancy add a few sprigs of parsley on top!

Oyster Sauce if you buy it from either Chinese Grocery or Whole Foods (their 365 brand), does come vegetarian. You must read labels.
This is a fantastic dish, if you like Asian inspired tasting foods.
Not only fast, but easy.
I like to use boullion, 1 Tbs cornstarch in warm water, dash of sherry, and dash of soy sauce, with some diced ginger, and toasted sesame oil, with 1T. hoisin sauce.
Make sauce, and put onto cooked tofu in pan. Simmer and bring to boil, or until thick.
This is great especially with brocolli (as indicated below).
Also yummy with fried tofu, braised tofu, baked tofu, and soft tofu.
See a vegetarian recipe for Ma Po tofu below. You can modify for vegetarian.
Marinade:
1 Tbsp (15mL) oyster-flavored sauce
1 tsp (3g) cornstarch
1/2 pound (230g) ground fake turkey
1 package (16 ounces or 455g) soft or regular tofu, drained
Sauce:
1/3 cup (80mL) broth
2 Tbsp (30mL) soy sauce
1 1/2 tsp (25mL) chile garlic sauce
1 tsp (5mL) black bean garlic sauce
1 tsp (3g) cornstarch
1/2 tsp (2g) ground toasted Szechuan peppercorns
2 Tbsp (30mL) canola oil
2 Tbsp (20g) minced garlic
1 fresh red chile pepper, minced
Chopped green onions, for garnish
Directions
Combine marinade ingredients in a bowl. Add meat and mix well. Let stand for 10 minutes. Cut tofu into 1/2-inch (1.25cm) cubes. Combine sauce ingredients in a bowl; set aside.
Place wok over high heat until hot. Add oil, swirling to coat sides. Add garlic and red chile pepper and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 10 seconds. Add meat mixture and stir-fry for 2 minutes.
Add tofu and sauce. Cook, stirring gently, until tofu is heated through and sauce boils and thickens.
Place in serving bowls and garnish with green onions

I had it long before I became vegetarian. It was quite good. It was one of the few things I craved for years after. I've had a few decent veggetarian oyster sauce substitutes that are pretty good.
