Being diabetic is scary, there are lots of consequences, your life changes and thinking about the future is often depressing. However, I have been diabetic, Type I, for 20 years now and have been through 2 pregnancies even though the doctors told me not to. When I think of the future, I wonder what it will be like, will I be blind or on dialysis? But I take one day at a time.

The best thing a person with diabetes can do is take care of themselves, eat right, exercise and watch their blood sugars. Given all this it is not impossible to live a rich, fulfilling life. I believe in spite of the diabetes, I have had many blessings that continue through today.

Good luck!!

It's kind of funny actually. In many ways, with diabetes, if you take the necessary steps, you could very possibly live LONGER than if you didn't have it.

Think about this. With diabetes, you will be avoiding sugar (and that includes alchohol as it is nearly complete sugar, odd as it seems), and avoiding white flour and starchey type foods. You'll also have to make sure to keep an even blood sugar, which will keep your weight more steady on average, and that will usually result in more energy, and as we know, active and energetic people do live longer.

That's about the jist of it. Diabetes will partially (not entirely) force you into a healthy diet. Couple that with medical technology almost completely taking care of diabetes on the medication end, and you've got yourself one healthy life.

If you're at all worried, try to get 20-30 straight minutes of aerobic exercise atleast 3-4 times weekly and cut out red meat along with keeping the good vegetable and lean meat balance in your diet. Keep away from alchohol and smoking, and keep your mind active and thinking. Suddenly you're alive and well in another 50 years.

And whatever you do, just be strong, and know that you can make it through. And even if any complications arise, there's almost certainly a medical answer that isn't too complex.

Best wishes!

Of course you will. Type 2 diabetics can live just as long as non-diabetics. In fact, if you do as I've done, life is pretty much the same as normal folks. It's all about blood sugar management. It's not that hard if you learn a few things. Here's what I've learned:

Be patient if you don't get through. It's one of those free geocities websites with limited bandwidth. Just try later if you can't get through right away. Bookmark it... I've spent a lot of time and money learning this stuff.

The tighter the control the better your chances should be. It can be scary, but it will get better trust me. I was diagnoised with type 1 a few years ago at age 29. i have just now gotten to the point where I can rest a little easier and live my life with out always being worried. The one thing that i have leaned is I am much healther now then I was before. I wasn't unhealthly but I eat much better and have a reason now to make it a point to get daily exercise. I was read a diabetic patient got the call from his dr. telling him he was diabetic and his dr. told him this may be the best thing that could happen to .

OF COURSE YOU WILL !!! The very best thing you can do for yourself is educate yourself about diabetes. Sounds like you have Type II. It's not easy to deal with, but hey, if you just adjust and modify your lifestyle you can make strides in your health care! Educate educate educate!!!! And continue your classes! You will probably be in better shape after you get this under control than you were years ago. It just becomes a way of life, that's all. Don't get depressed or start denying you have a problem like alot of newly diagnosed diabetics do. Work on yourself !!! Give your self a gift of knowledge and you will have a wonderful life. Godloveya and bless you!!!

Well, I can't promise an absolutely normal life expectancy, even with the best glycemic control diabetes is still a pretty potent risk factor for a bunch of unpleasant diseases, but you can definately minimize your chances of getting complications and get yourself more time without developing them by keeping your blood sugar as close to normal as possible.

Yes
but not only sugar needs to be controlled.
Blood pressure, cholesterol, body weight also need to be fine.
Low dose of Aspirin (75-80 mgs) after lunch is also a thing that each person with diabetes over 40 years old should consider.
