I don't usually take any nasal decongestants, but seriously, I couldn't breathe, and my doc said that it was okay to take while pregnant.

It's made me a nervous wreck, though, and I can't sleep. My heart feels like it's slamming up against my chest wall, and my chest hurts a little.

Has anyone else had this happen while pregnant? Was it just a side-effect, or was there anything really wrong?

Thank you for all of the answers so far. By the way, I'm 28. I know that at my age, chest pains like these are very rarely serious.

I feel like it's a cross between a panic attack and side effects from the medication (I'm never taking this crap again)...

I don't want to go to the ER, because I know that this is probably a side effect of the Sudafed (and I was expecting it, SOMEWHAT).

Are there any signs that would indicate that it could be something more serious?

Sudafed is a horrible drug, and this is a very common reaction to it. Breathlessness also and panic. Call your doctor to be safe. Drink some water and try to focus on your breathing. Don't ever take Sudafed again (not that you would), and tell your friends not to.

The same thing happened to me years ago and I went to the ER. I got through it, no damage. But it scared the hell out of me. You will feel better in a few hours.

Nasal decongestants have pseudo-effedrine (spell check) in them which causes these symptoms. You can't stop them. If you are very concerned call the ER or your doc. It will pass. In the meantime walk around to burn off the extra energy. Just pacing the room might help. This happened to me once is how I know. Nothing is worse than being all figitty & trying to fall asleep.

*edit*
A sign that it is more serious is a sharp stabbing pain in the chest. Then it's time to call an ambulance.

Don't ask YAHOO! answers about your chest pain. That being said, it is a side effect of Sudafed PE and I am having the same thing right now. If it doesn't go away see a Dr. for sure. But for god's sake don't ask YAHOO! answers any medical questions. It's like going to the bus stop and asking random strangers.

If you are having chest pain, for any reason. GO TO THE ER. Especially since you a pregnant. Sudafed increases your heart rate and it sound like your heart is not liking it at all. GO TO THE ER!!

Its a common reaction to sudafed. It happened to me when I took the new sudafed PE. It doesn't contain suphedrine but Phenylephrine. I don't know why, but it seems I can't take the phenlephrine without having a reaction to it like that. You should definitely contact your physician and let him know. It will calm down, just try not to panic.
