Well at three, they are not into the fillings as much as the flavor (chocolate Im sure is her favorite) and the ice cream you put on top.Grocery store bakeries are okay- but if you go to Costco or Sams club- they can do creative designs and character cakes that will amuse her. Also check the yellow pages in your area- there is always a stay at home mom that makes fantastic cakes for pennies. You're a great father to care so much about her cake, she is lucky to have you.

I'd say, go with an ice-cream cake. Three year olds LOVE ice cream!! Dairy Queen is famous for their birthday cakes, and you have to live in an awfully small town not to have a DQ!! Another alternative...just in case you DON'T have a DQ - you can make one very easily on your own. Spray cooking spray in a spring form pan, lightly soften your favorite ice cream...or ice creams, you could easily do a combo of different flavored layers, then smoosh it into the pan with a spatuala so it covers the entire pan. You could also do a base by simply smashing up your childs favorite cookies and layering them on the bottom before adding the ice cream. And you can decorate the top with plain whipped cream and sprinkles, or skip the whipped cream and buy yourself some of that canned frosting to write with and write "Happy Birthday" on the top. You could also buy some pre-made cake decorations and candle holders to decorate it. Then stick it in the freezer once your finished so it can set, again. For a three year old, I don't think you need to get too fancy. They are sure to remember they had an ice cream cake, but likely won't remember what was on the top besides their name and the candles!! HOPE THIS HELPS!! Good luck!!

Have you considered making an ice cream cake? Or maybe have a fruit cake or pizza made instead. Who said that it is manditory that you serve cake?
We started our own tradition when my son was born. Every year he gets his favorite dessert with the candles on it. Sure is hard to put 10 candles on a cookie....but we had a good time.
Enjoy the birthday....not the material things.

IWhy do you need a bakery? Make a "Dirt Cake". It's not really a cake. It's made of crushed cookies. pudding and cool whip...yum. Check out...http://homecooking.about.com/library/archive/blc/htm. I'd even throw in some gummy worms for good measure. It's not a cake, but I bet she will love it.

Pull out your yellow pages and look under bakeries -- then start reading their discriptions -- look for 'specialty cakes', they can be filled, frozen, etc, etc.

You can also contact a cake decorating supply company and have them recommend a bakery OR one of their customers (many work out of their homes and do FANTASTIC jobs).

Hmm, if you are in Singapore, then maybe you can try Swensen's. They served very nice Ice-Cream Cakes.

Good luck on the cake and happy birthday to the gal

If you live in a big enough city, CitySearch is a great place to start. They have online reviews and "best of" contests in each category. I *always* use Citysearch for picking new restaurants and the like, and the ratings are dead-on. Best of luck!
