Because diabetes is a disease that affects everything from the pancreas to the liver to the kidneys, drinking in excess can speed up the damaging effects diabetes has on the entire vascular system. Even the maculas of the eyes, the retinas, the capillaries of the brain, and the heart can be injured by diabetes.
Even once a week is too much because there is a lot of cane sugar in spirits and refined sugar in wine and beer.
His blood sugar is obviously spiking very high which adds to the inebreating effects of the alcohol, therefore, the individual is actually endangering their life because a huge spike can actually cause the organs to shut down as they are already weakened by the diabetes.
How long will he live? That's really up to him. If he cuts out this stupid behaviour then he definitely has a better chance to live a longer, fuller life.

Alcohol usually drops the blood glucose drastically the morning after. Keep in mind that alcoholism and diabetes are both life threatening in themselves, take the effects of both, combine them; you can easily come to a conclusion yourself. Beside the usual damage to body organs, IE: cirrhosis of the liver, alcohol decreases the blood glucose level extensively. Extremely high blood sugar can lead to coma, seizures and death, as well as extremely low blood sugar. As for the life span, it all depends upon what damage has already been done, Oral medication or insulin controlled is also a factor. All in all if this life style continues, the quality and quantity if not good. Here are few of the physical effects of alcoholism:

stomach and intestinal problems
poor diet and weight loss
Liver problems such as swelling
Pain in the side or back from kidney problems
ulcers
blackouts, unable to remember drinking episodes
insomnia
nausea
shaking, delirium tremens

I don't recommend it, because it's hard on your liver and isn't advisable while taking medication... and poorly controlled diabetes is bad enough on your body's parts. You don't want to make a bad situation worse. A little social drinking now and then is not necessarily a bad thing, but getting totally wasted is just plain stupid. How long will he live? Depends on how well he's maintaining his blood sugar. If he's doing a good job of keeping it down where it belongs, he could live a long, long time provided he doesn't get into doing it daily. If he's not maintaining low blood sugar, he's just going to go downhill and probably won't last beyond 60. Just my educated opinion, of course.

This is a major problem for when your wasted you cant monitor your blood sugar level. Drinking out of moderation will hurt his eyesight and enhance other diabetic complications. With that said he could die the next time hes wasted from high blood sugar or he could live for a long time with complications that make life well rather unpleasant.

I read the answers but no one told you drinking lowers your sugar. Be sure to eat before you drink. It will help you drink a bit better too.

Stay away from the alcohol and pot. If you MUST use drugs, stick with cocaine or acid. Less toll on your blood sugar levels.
