Ok so i have had this problem for over a month or so now. The problem is that one side of my nose is ALWAYS blocked. It's not the same nostril every day. For example, I my left nostril is blocked and i lay down on my right side, i can kind of feel something going from my left to right nostril for a couple of seconds. And then suddenly my right nostril is blocked. This is really really annoying and irritating especially when i do heavy work such as play sports, run, etc. because i have a hard time breathing. One time i looked in the mirror and i found that the blocked nostril was blocked by this "over-sized poof". I have no idea what this is. Can anyone help me? Thank you

you probably have a low grade rhinitis. Suggest you first try Zicam nasal swabs, use as directed on the package, this really does work wonders for me. If the Zicam doesn't clear up the rhinitis, you may need a short course of antibiotic, or perhaps a steroidal nasal spray you would get those from your doctor.

I suffer from the same issue. I have found that massaging the sinus cavity points on my face while applying pressure to the opposite ear (lying on on the opposite side of the clogged side. Kinda looks like watching tv on the floor). The point that works best for me is the soft tissue above the eye near the the middle of my brow. You can tell if it's the right spot because you will feel your sinuses moving whenever you massage the area in a circular motion. I find doing this for 3 to 5 minutes will usually do the trick. If not, I will get out of bed and blow my nose hard and then crawl back into bed and try again. That usually does the trick. I too use nasal spray but try to avoid it because it can exacerbate the problem in following nights. Good luck and you are not the only one that suffers from this!

I mean seasonal stuffiness CMON and those who say blow your nose really doesn't help I am sometimes actually unable to blow my nose because of this problem like nothing comes out because its swollen and wont let me. people don't need to answer when they are too lazy to read the one paragraph QUESTION.

Blocked Nostril On One Side

I had surgery on this problem (rhinoplasty) a year ago, and to tell the truth Im not sure it did any good as it switches from nostril to nostril again. I do have moments when I can breathe through both but for the most part, it's either one side or the other. The "over-sized poof" you refer to, is it skin and mucus? If so, this is the thing thats doing the blocking, as I had the same thing. It was much more pronounced too, when my allergies were acting up, had a cold, etc. As far as the breathing is concerned I have found that your body will adapt through your only using one nostril just fine, you just have to give it time. I've had this problem all my life and I feel that I can breathe just fine. If you want to consider surgery, punch "rhinoplasty" in google and take a gander. Hope this helps, good luck.

I have similar sinus problems. And I have sleep apnea so I have to breathe though my nose. I use a nasal spray just before go to sleep. Mine is a generic prescription of Flonase. But ask the pharmacist what he would recommend. Might be allergy's too, ask the pharmacist about a day or night time decongestant. And your generics now a days are just as good as the brand names. So go ahead buy the generics and save a few bucks. If it gets worse you might want to talk to a Dr. if you can.

Most of the days I get one side headache in the early hours of the day and the other side of the nose gets blocked. The pain doesn t subside unless I take a pain killer. I have already consented an ENT specialist and I have undergone an operation for rectifying the sludge in my nose but even then I get frequent headached. What is the reason ?

It's a cold. When I get colds there is usually ALWAYS one side of my nose that is blocked. I know exactly what you're talking about, and yes, it is REALLY annoying. I'm not really sure what you can do, but I just waited it out.

Sounds like you need some breathe-right nose strips and maybe think about sleeping in an upright position.

For daytime, pop a stick of Ice Breakers gum. Sounds wierd but it works.
