Asthma also called reactive airway disease, is characterized by excessive sensitivity of the airways to certain stimuli, which can vary from person to person. This hypersensitivity cause excessive production of mucous and spasm of the smooth muscles of the bronchi. This leads to wheezing and increased work of breathing.

Stimuli that can cause this include allergens (pollen, mold, food allergies), irritants (smoke, chemicals), cold, and exercise.

It's not exactly the lungs. As far as I know, asthma makes the arteries of the body very thin, making it hard for blood cells that are carrying oxygen to efficiently transport it. At least, I THINK that's what it is.
