I'd just tell them straight out. My sister is a vegetarian and it does make family get togethers a little more difficult but it's not enough to cause problems. You're still the same person and you can always offer to prepare your own food so it's not any more work for her.

My daughter came to us with the same thing a number of years ago. We told her that it would be ok if she wasn't picky about what was served and that she would eat all that was in front of her.
The one thing that impressed my wife and I was that she had prepared a menu for us with the items that she wanted to eat and on what days. Breakfasts are easy, toast, fruit, and shakes...lunch was easy too as my daughter hs no problem with taking raw vegetables to school like red peppers, carrots, brochali, etc. with some dipping sauce.
Dinner is the tricky part but there are a lot of vegetarian type hamburgers and hot dogs...doesn't really suit my palete but then again, I love meat.
So prepare for your mom a menu that satisfies the both of you. Help her to find the stuff she needs. DO NOT BE PICKY about any kind of vegetables or some of the vegetarian stuff. If you do not like something, finish it and never buy it again.
The other thing about my daughter was that she did not freak out when we cooked her food in the same pots and pans we used for meat, just seperately of course.
Help make this as easy for your mom and I can see that maybe she'll be there to help you along especially if you help her along.
Once a week we still have a salad night where we serve up a variety of salads, cauliflower, brochalli...
Also note that bacon bits bought at the store contain no meat whatsoever.

I told my parents that I do not like the texture of meat. When I tried to explain that I am a vegeterian, she said that the "college culture" wore off on me. I know it can be hard while living at home...You are sort of at the mercy of mom and dad. Just avoid food with meat in it. DO not make a big issue about it, do not even mention it if it makes it easier for you. Just don't eat it. At family dinners (like our annual Pig-Pickin) I just eat slaw, beans, etc, and AVOID the pig. Nothing said, and I definitely do not ask them to make special foods for me, etc!
Good luck, stay strong with your choice if it really makes you happy!!!!!

I think that you should just be straight with your parents. Just tell them. And if they are like my mom they will probably have some questions or concerns. So before you talk to them about it you should do your research. Learn about how to be a healthy veg. Learn what you need to eat. So that when they ask, and chances are that they will, you will have the awnsers. You should also be prepared for a bad reaction from your parents. They may not like your choice. But try to listen to their concerns and awnser them the best that you can.
Good luck...
oh and a really great web cite for vegs is http://www.veggie123.com/veggie/chapter1/
it really helped me learn about vegetarianism and game me some awnsers to my parents questions.

Tell your mom you don't like meat and you wont eat meat and let her feel how she feels. You wouldn't want anyone telling you not to get upset by something that upsets you. You have to let her feel her feelings. She might not like it but what can she do really? Nothing. If she makes meat for dinner then just eat the other foods. If she only makes meat for dinner get up and make yourself something.

Doing this this kind will with somewhat of luck get you the reaction you want and coach that you've the adulthood to think with regard to the outcomes on your health and kin and how you intend to strive against those so that you'll stay healthful and save anybody satisfied. Its not extremely straightforward on your mother and father to easily drop the bomb with out any consultation with them previous and also you may basically make the difficulty worse in case you benefit this.

Make sure you read up on how to eat right and prepare your own meals and show them that. Let them know you will eat side dishes with them and prepare your own main course. Tell them you are ethically opposed to eating meat and they should respect that and you will not make it a burden on them.

I'd just tell them. What're they going to do? Force the meat down your throat? A good parent would support their child's beliefs.
