I am trying to be diplomatic by finding some sources for you (no one wants to be told they are wrong), this way you can make your own opinion.
"Can you get a sexually transmitted disease from door knobs, toilet seats, drinking fountains, and swimming pools?
For the most part, the answer is no. The germs that cause sexually transmitted diseases do not live for a long time outside the human body and are very sensitive to temperature and light. However, some of the more rare STD's, such as crabs and scabies can be acquired from unclean toilet seats, towels, bedding and clothes.". (Taken from site #1)
MY FAVORITE ANSWER... "In the real world, the only way you can get an STD is by having sex.
I suppose a lawyer could always make some sort of case for a "what if...". But realistically those things don't happen. You don't get STD's from toilet seats or pools or other people's clothes. You get STD's when you have sex with someone who has an STD.". -Barbara Boyer, D.O.

BUT, I THINK THIS SUMS IT ALL UP...
"First of all, the toilet myth is just that. Most STDs can only be transmitted through contact with bodily fluids. This is why they are called sexually transmitted diseases. The only real thing to worry about is getting crabs (pubic lice). According to the Ohio University Department of Health Education and Wellness, pubic lice can be spread by the sharing of clothing and towels, as well as sitting on beds or couches. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that you cannot get STD’s such as bacterial vaginosis, syphilis, HIV/AIDS and trichomonas infections from toilet seats or sharing drinks or utensils.". I come from a long line of medical practitioners and they would all spit soda from their nose if you honestly tried to convince one of them that sitting on the toilet is a health risk. ALSO, I myself spent three rewarding years of my life doing vol. work w/ HIV/AIDS patients. I spent time in their homes/hos. rooms and had EXTENSIVE training on this exact thing...you are not going to get a sexually transmitted disease from a toilet. (Maybe kids have lied to their phy. in the past and they account for the 2 in a million who said they have no idea how they got it... *wink wink*)
If this is something you want to know more about for yourself don't listen to the people here. Read "The Secret Life of Germs" After that you'll realize it's not the toilet you should worry about, it's the floor...
Hope this helped!

NO. Most stds don't survive for long periods of time out side of the body or on surfaces of objects. The most you could get is crabs if the toilet seat was very, very dirty. Most of the time there are people scheduled to clean public washrooms so there wouldn't be much chance for any thing to survive. You get stds from having oral sex or sexual intercourse. So if you had sex while sitting on the toilet seat then you could possibly get an std. It's very rare to get an std from an inanimate object. If you're still worried then use toilet seat protectors or put some toilet paper over the seat. I sit on the seat all the time, haven't contracted any thing from a public washroom.

Do an online search yourself to see what info you can find, but one article I just found for you said this:
"Generally, STDs are not passed by coming in contact with a toilet seat. Most STDs are only transmitted during sexual contact, either by skin-to-skin contact or through body fluid exchange. Crabs, or pubic lice, may be transmitted through sexual contact, sleeping in infected bedding, sharing infected clothing and possibly through sitting on an infested toilet seat."

It is possible but you can practice some safe practices, such as covering the toilet seat or carrying disinfectant wipes with you. Most viruses do not last very long exposed to open air so the risk, while there, is not as high.
