Keep the house very clean. I wipe down my bathroom fixtures every day with a solution of Lysol, and believe it or not it does seem to work: My husband and I have not caught colds or flu since I started doing that.
Eat to boost your immune system. Echinecea is supposed to be good, if you're not allergic to ragweed. Otherwise, I prefer garlic and vitamin C.
And wash your hands a lot.
Good luck!

The flu shot is not a guarantee against receiving the flu which is puzzling to me why many people still get the shot. Nothing is actually guaranteed to avoid the flu but the key to reduce the risk is preventive maintenance.
The most common ways people catch colds and the flu is by rubbing their nose or their eyes after their hands have been contaminated with a virus. By washing your hands OFTEN, especially:
before, during, and after you prepare food
before you eat, and after you use the bathroom
after handling animals or animal waste
when your hands are dirty, and
more frequently when someone in your home is sick.
And avoid contact with people who are sick.

Flu is caused by a virus. Medications such as anti-biotics are ineffective against a virus. A flu shot builds up immunity to the virus before you contract that virus. Without the flu shot, your body self-defense mechanisms must prepare the antibodies necessary to attack the virus.
The best thing you can do when you get the flu is to treat the symptoms and make yourself comfortable.

It's not quiet the same but I get bronchitis every year when the cold season starts...so I started this year off taking double doses of vitamin C and drinking lots of hot tea and dropping a cough drop (honey and lemon) into it...you'd be surprised how this helps ward off the sniffles that can turn into something more drastic.

There are prescription antiviral medications that your doctor can give you to combat the virus, but it will only shorten the syptoms, not cure it completely.
