No, I was already vegan. I don't think many people will become vegan or vegetarian because of a forum like this. They will only do it after careful thought, and/or because of reading that goes deeper than what is typically posted on this forum. Actually, this mostly seems to be a vegan/vegetarian-bashing forum. I'm always fascinated at how much some people hate vegans and vegetarians. This is only a select group, of course; many meat-eaters don't hate vegans at all. I imagine that those who do are a bit like the biggest homophobes - probably closet cases, i.e., those who feel guilty about meat and secretly believe they should become vegetarians. Meat-eaters who are secure in their diets probably would not be wasting time here, bashing ours.

I respect the fact that some people don't eat meat.

While I don't understand what I consider overzealous concern for animal suffering, I realize that some people just have bigger hearts than me.

I would consider it for dietary reasons, and I do believe that meat does have its drawbacks, especially when consumed in a traditional American diet.

However, I will never come to accept the philosophy behind it. I was shopping downtown with my wife, and there was a PETA demonstration at the corner with rowdy people, so of couse, we went to see what it was about, just out of curiosity.

The bottom line is that I was wearing my leather jacket, and some PETA members screaming about "being Vegan" (I forget the chant, but it was pretty sophmoric) started hassling me about the leather jacket I was wearing. One girl took a can of red spray paint and drew an "X" on the back of it while I was listening to the person in front of me berate me for "wearing a dead carcass". My wife saw it and started pushing the girl who painted me, and ended up getting spray painted in the face.

My jacket was the one momento I purchased during a trip to the middle east, and the sentimental value will never be replaced.

So I was doing research on PETA and found Yahoo Answers. I admit, I get a little mad when I see people reference posts with www.peta2. links because this very group damaged my personal property. I wrote PETA and sent them pictures of the jacket, and I got a letter back berating me further for having it in the first place.

I'm just simply in awe that 3/4 of a million people in America are part of this organization, and support those kinds of ideals where innocent bystandards, and open-minded people who are unfortunate to wear the wrong thing while downtown are punished by the lawless acts of juvenilly-minded vandalistic "activists".

I'm desperately trying to come to terms with Vegans and Vegetarians who subscribe to PETA for ANY reason, in hopes of finding that the attitudes of those who wrecked my jacket and assaulted my wife are not the norm in this group - but by SOME of the posts, the amount of intolerance displayed here only suggests that this is really how this group operates.

"In the name of the defenseless animals", of course.

No i come from a vegetarian family and I only come on YA to try to help others who have questions about vegetarianism. However I agree with what the other answerer said - you try to tell people the facts about nutrition and most of them get mad. I think people are just in denial and seeking to prove to themselves that they should be eating meat, and when we destroy that cosy bubble they've built around themselves they can't cope with it. I don't think anyone actually follows the links offered or takes on board any of the facts they're told over and over again. So if someone was to come vegetarian on the basis of this site I would be surprised.

it definetly helped me become more confident and proud of my choice in being vegan.it is cool to know that there are other people that decided to make the same choice as me and that I can share experiences, recipes, philosophies and whatever with them.people like you, andielep, vegon, greenghost, and several other regulars in the V&V section.I share pretty much the same views and outlooks in life as them. They all seem like great people, intelligent people who I can really relate to.

No, funny thing is when a vegetarian or a vegan ask a question about protein content in grains and stuff and you give them a scientific answer with reference, they get mad at you and don't believe what you have said. It's like you just told them there favorite baseball team blows. Facts are facts.

No. When I read the questions and the answers regarding Vegan or Vegetarian, most of them have problem with imbalance nutrients intake. Better for me to stick to who I am, eat more meat.

No, I was a vegetarian and it ruined my health due to soy products being the main source of protein in a vegans diet.
