my friend has pancreatitus and i wondered if it is closely related to eating badly. All she eats is like sugary foods. She is really thin, so im sure she thinks its okay to eat that stuff but really she could eat a bunch of junk food but when it comes to regular food shes always saying she isnt hungry. My stepdad told me that the pancreas>sp? breaks down those foods and if your eating a lot it might not have enough insulin and it could eventually lead to diabeties>sp? i just wondered if any one else knew about this. thanks

First of all, let's talk about what 'pancreatitis' really is. This is one of those medical words that make things sound about a hundred times more precise and complicated than it needs to be. Put in lay terms, pancreatitis means you have a swollen pancreas.

As you might imagine, there are as many things that might give you a swollen pancreas as there are which might give you a swollen lip. Common factors include gallstones, alcohol (these two account for the vast majority of all cases), diet, illness, and hormonal imbalances. Which of these many things is actually causing your friend's problem is a matter for testing... but it probably wouldn't hurt to avoid any of those causes, if possible.

It's worth noting that the kind of diet that tends to lead to pancreatitis is NOT one with tons of sugars (though that's no good for you either), but actually one with tons of fats. Of course, if your friend is only eating candy bars, she's probably getting a more than healthy dose of both. Usually two of the primary tools in treatment of pancreatitis is to drink lots of fluids and switch to a low-fat diet. Both of which are probably good ideas even for perfectly healthy people.

Another major cause that's worth expanding on is hormones. In this case, the culprit is often estrogen. Some women get pancreatitis when they become pregnant, and some when they are taking birth control pills. If it's the former... well, that's not going to last longer than a few months. If it's the latter, your friend could just try switching to a pill with a different formulation. It's a good thing there are so many different varieties out there to choose from!

In the mean time, it's probably a good idea for your friend to do the fluids and the diet. Since that kind of thing is a good idea for everyone, you might help be able to influence your friend by doing it together! Good luck!

To me it looks like your friend is a fool and committing some sort of involuntary suicide. acute pancreatis is a very severe illness. the worst cancer of all is pancreas cancer, it takes you away in no time and I would advise your friend to stop eating that sugary cr..p if she does not want to get into much more serious problems.
