As a life-time asthmatic I can give you a good tip. Whenever I am somewhere without my inhaler and my breathing becomes labored, I buy myself a caffinated Pepsi or Coke. I was told by my pulmonologist a long time ago that caffeine is a natural form of theophylline. Theopylline is in many asthma medications and inhalers. It is a good way to help out in a pinch. While it will not stop the attack, it will help until you can get your medication.
I drink caffeinated Pepsi all the time just for this reason.
The other answerer was right. Do not injest any dairy products at all as they will produce more mucus.
Hope this helped a little!

Some people find that avoiding certain foods helps with breathing difficulties. Milk and dairy products are quite commonly blamed for causing the excretions of the lungs to be too heavy. You might try avoiding dairy products for a couple of weeks. I would recommend seeking the advice of your physician. If they aren't open to the idea you might want to try your local health food store. The people who work there are quite versed on what is the latest popular item to treat various health conditions. Sometimes the stuff they recommend actually works!

In addition to avoiding the irritants [although I find Ginger tea is good for the sinuses, if not the lungs]:

Black coffee is good for mild asthma symptoms.

Anise [black licorice] is good for mild asthma symptoms. Bronchial spasms and wheezing will back off or go away entirely. I stress again for mild symptoms only.

Raven's Nest Herbs makes an herbal tea just for asthma symptoms that's quite good too. www.ravensnestherbals.com
