Alprazolam (Xanax) was nearly withdrawn (I wish it had been) by the Food and Drug Administration some years ago and it is indeed an awful medication. I do not prescribe it - never have - and do not understand why some physicians do so I applaud you for wanting to stop it. Similar drugs do not share the same concerns as alprazolam so please ask your physician to change you to another benzodiazepine (BZ) which should not be hard at all and then the dose of the new medication may be adjusted to the lowest level that works. Other than alprazolam the only BZ that is a problems is diazepam (Valium). Good luck.

Do NOT try to get off of Alprozalam by yourself. Contact your doctor, and he or she can start tapering off the dose.

There are other things that you can take. Paxil, an SSRI anti-depressant, is very effective in combating anxiety. So is Zoloft.

You may find that with the assistance of the antidepressants, you won't even NEED to take the Xanax, anymore.

Talk to your doctor, please.

Getting off Xanax can be a problem. You may need to go into rehab just as for a narcotic.
