I agree with the football instead of the field...green icing stains your lips and tounge really bad...sometimes even the teeth so your pictures had better be taken before the cake is cut!!!

I made a jersy once using a 9 x 13 cake and cutting the end off and then in half to make the sleeves...it wasnt too hard to do and the numbers and team name - I made by making a word document with the right font. I cut ith out and made a pattern.

Since my family likes coconut, I died coconut the color of the team jersy and used the pattern to place the undied coconut for the numbers...

Well you could buy a pan which is shaped like a football. Or just make a rectangular cake. Baste the entire thing with green icing to represent the grass. Then if you go to any cake decorating supply store, they will sell a kit of little players and goal posts. Usually sets of the sort are pretty cheap, only around $5 or so. Use white icing for lines.

It might be easier to do a football (instead of a football field). Just bake a big cake, and cut it into a football shape. Cover with chocolate frosting, and put white icing for the laces. (That's assuming that you're talking about American football... soccer might be more difficult.) Loot at a real football to make sure you get it right ;-)

Also, if there is a party store in your area, they probably have little football candles and things to put on the cake. Good luck!

Go to your local supermarket to their bakery. You can usually purchase their decorating packages for cakes, I guarantee they will have a football field (its usually not too expensive to buy their already decorated cakes either). Look through the pictures they have for ordering cakes to get an idea of how to make it look like a football field.

Good luck

Dye the icing green for the field. Dye toothpicks and glue them together like goal posts and put them on both ends. Use white icing for the football field lines.

green icing for grass, white icing for yard lines, do the goal posts, as another answer suggested, and use Kinder surprise toys as your two teams. We did this for a friend's birthday, and used icing to write little numbers on each player's back, and arranged them in an offense/defense position. It was Predators versus Prey. (lions, tigers, dinosaurs against the zebras, ostriches and frogs) Or use Lego men and give 'em team colors.
