Chronic and even acute Hiccups can really be a pain!
Try this, hold your breath for 30 seconds and then swallow 1/4 teaspoon of sugar. Do this every 30 minutes three times.
Most folks are in remission on the very first swallow of the sugar.

Many a times, it does happen in the hospital wards , ..In majority of the situations, an antispasmodics will help in a big way...In excited or worried patients , anxiolytics will also help in relieving the hiccoughs...
dont worry ! follow the advice given by your consultant..he knows you the best...right ?
