It is a straight forward procedure and very safe. The only pain which your father in law will experience is when the local anaesthetic is being injected, after that he should not feel anything.

Depending on how they seal up the puncture wound will depend on how long he will stay in hospital - but he should be home by the following day at the latest.

Most of the patients ive spoken to after the procedure have said it was over very quickly and were suprised at how comfortable it was.

It is relatively safe, but with all invasive procedures there is a risk involved. The entrance is normally made through the groin on the right side, a dye is injected and it's like a continuall x ray of the heart, they can see all the arteries and tell if they are blocked, some will do angioplasty at that time others will do it in another operation,or if called for they will do by-pass.
I have had 5 of these procedures done but no by-pass, there is very little pain involved, but the healing of the incision takes some time.

yse I ahve undergone this test on 13th September, 2006, and it took only 30 minutes to complete the test, and another 4 hours in the Coronary care unit (CCU), as it was done through my arm, if it be done through groin, then about 6 hours are required at the CCU.

Coronary Angiography

What is coronary angiography?
Coronary angiography is an X-ray examination of the blood vessels or chambers of the heart. A very small tube (catheter) is inserted into a blood vessel in your groin or arm. The tip of the tube is positioned either in the heart or at the beginning of the arteries supplying the heart, and a special fluid (called a contrast medium or dye) is injected. This fluid is visible by X-ray, and the pictures that are obtained are called angiograms.

Another name for this test is coronary arteriography.

What are the pros and cons of angiography?

The pros and cons of coronary arteriography vary for every patient. The physician and patient should discuss the specific situation. Often an angiogram is necessary before deciding whether coronary disease needs more treatment.

As far as safety goes, it is a very safe and very common procedure. There are very seldom complications. There isn't much pain at all except with the initial stick of lidocaine which numbs the insertion site in the groin. Otherwise there shouldn't be any, just some discomfort if the bedrest after the procedure is long. There really aren't any after effects. Most people go home that day or the next day, that just depends on if the patient needed a stent or angioplasty.
