My Dads blood pressure is going nuts.. One day it is 180/80 then 2 days later it is 89/48? Now it is 120/63. I cant find anything on what that bottom number means and what to do if the top number is ok but the bottom is too low or too high. If anyone knows anything I would love to hear from you. Thanks

My honest feeling is the BP readings taken are not correct. Such high and low changes are next to impossible. You need to tak him to a cardiologist for evaluating the position and treating him. Blood Pressure - high or low - is termed as silent killer. Please see the doctor without delay.

Now a short note from Wikipedia about BP for your inforamtion -

Blood pressure is the pressure exerted by the blood at right angles to the walls of the blood vessels. Unless indicated otherwise, blood pressure refers to systemic arterial blood pressure, i.e., the pressure in the large arteries delivering blood to body parts other than the lungs, such as the brachial artery (in the arm). The pressure of the blood in other vessels is lower than the arterial pressure. Blood pressure values are universally stated in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). The systolic pressure is defined as the peak pressure in the arteries during the cardiac cycle; the diastolic pressure is the lowest pressure (at the resting phase of the cardiac cycle). The mean arterial pressure and pulse pressure are other important quantities.

Typical values for a resting, healthy adult human are approximately 120 mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg diastolic (written as 120/80 mmHg), with large individual variations. These measures of blood pressure are not static, but undergo natural variations from one heartbeat to another or throughout the day (in a circadian rhythm); they also change in response to stress, nutritional factors, drugs, or disease-

the 1st number is the Major one, 180 is way to high and 89 is way to low, his last reading of 120 over 63 is better.
For example:

140/90mmHg

It is said as "140 over 90," for example. The top number, which is called the systolic pressure, shows the pressure in your arteries when your heart is forcing blood through them. The bottom number, called the diastolic pressure, shows the pressure in your arteries when your heart relaxes. The top number can be anywhere from 90 to 240 and the bottom number can be anywhere from 60 to 140. Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury, which is written down as: mmHg

Everyone has a different blood pressure and it can change in the same person during the day and night. Your blood pressure varies by large amounts, depending on what you are doing. The lowest blood pressures occur when you are asleep or if you relax all your muscles. Standing up, exercising or anxiety all cause an increase in blood pressure. In a single day your blood pressure may vary by 30 to 40 mmHg systolic with similar proportionate changes in diastolic pressure. This is why when you have your blood pressure level assessed it is so important to have it measured under the same conditions every time.

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. In just 21 days, I honestly can't remember feeling this good, my blood pressure went from 175/110 to 125/70.

You should be worring about your 180/80..that is too high...but as for the diastolic number (the bottom number) being under 60...if you dont have any symptoms of low blood pressure there really isnt anything to worry about...it is different for high blood pressure because to be diagnosed with high blood pressure then it only relies on your blood pressure numbers alone...as for low blood pressure it is having symptoms of low blood pressure and how your blood pressure reads..good luck

Hm...is the manual sphygmomanometer new or old? Some need to be recalibrated or 'checked', especially the old mercury ones *cringe*, to make sure it is still within specs; your technique sounds fine, and the measurements are ok for systolic but kinda low in diastolic. Another possibility is that the cuff is not put on properly? like too loose around the arm? and is your stethoscope ontop of the vein at the elbow's crease?

It means he needs to see his doctor to get his medication (if he takes any) straightened out. 180/80 is hypertensive, 89/48 is hypotensive, and 120/63 is normal.

Is he taking his pressure correctly? The cuff big enough? Same time of the day?
