This is used in a hospital to measure the volume of air in a persons lungs......people that suffer from respiratory problems.
FYI....if a person is having an asthmatic attack and ends up in the emergency room....this machine can tell how much air is in the lungs. It measures a persons exhaled carbon dioxide....thus determining the amount of air flow in the persons system.

Volume respirator is used for the frequency of breaths of a patient that is on a respirator. For instance an adult breaths 12-20 times per min. A volume respirator can be set for for example 14 times per min. tidal volume pressure which the respirator auto. gives.

Well, it certainly is NOT a ventilator as someone answered. It does not give tidal volumes/resp rate/etc. People commonly confuse the two, even "medics." A respirator is used to protect against disease, etc. It is a mask that care givers wear when taking care of patients with TB and other infectious disease.
