Recipe for getting rid of head lice
* Persistence

* Knowledge
* A good metal nit comb

* A bottle of inexpensive olive oil
* Manual nit picking

and
A sense of humor!

Olive oil smothers and kills active head lice. Consumers also report that the olive oil makes nit removal easier and remoisturizes the scalp after using a pediculicide. And unlike pediculicides olive oil can be used repeatedly or as a precaution after exposure to head lice.

Be aware that over-the-counter and prescription drugs used to treat head lice are no longer very effective because head lice seem to have become resistant to these products. If she's used these drugs and still has head lice, she shouldn't use more chemicals in the hopes head lice will go away - they won't. Also, prescription drugs containing the chemicals Lindane (Kwell) or Malathion (Ovide) are powerful insecticides and could have serious health consequences and head lice have developed resistance to these pesticides as well. Instead, she should use the olive oil smothering technique. It is a non-toxic and effective method for getting rid of head lice.

has the entire house been scrubbed? All sheets blankets etc...washed in HOT HOT water and dried repeatedly (You want them really HOT) The carpets vacuumed....the CAR and the seats in it vacuumed. The mattress of her bed covered with plastic and sealed. Any stuffed animals in her room, in rooms she goes into need the same treatment as the sheets or put them in plastic bags...get all the air out and let them sit. I don't remember how long. But I want to say at least 1 mo. Everyone in the house needs treated. Don't forget hats coats sweaters etc...

As for the hair...mayo, PB, Vaseline and oil work....put it on the head - saturate! Cover with a shower cap and sleep in it ....the next morning....wash extremely well. Comb the hair out with a nit comb. There is also a spray (kinda like hair spray) that turns the nits and eggs colors so they are easier to see. (We had hot pink....battled this one forever with a very long haired young girl) Worse comes to worse....tell her to find a short haircut she likes and be prepared to get it

Sounds like Sinead O'Connor time, if it has hair on it or around it's time to shave it off. These nasty little bastards are just like crabs, they latch on to the base of the hair and won't let go all that easily. A common household remedy is Campho Pheneque, mixed 50/50 with baby shampoo, and then comb out with a nit comb. Bleaching doesn't work, hair color doesn't work.

Call the doctor, they can prescribe something stronger. Make sure EVERYTHING has been cleaned, stored away, etc. Dying her hair can help, too, but if she doesn't want to do that, definately get something from the doctor.
