The cough is the body's way of expelling material from the lungs. The mechanics of the cough are cough are very simple: the throat closes, and the diaphragm and chest muscles begin to contract. This builds up pressure in the lungs. Suddenly the throat opens, and the pressure is expelled forcefully all at once through the trachea (the windpipe). The resulting force of air rushing through the lungs picks up the material that has
collected there and expels it as well, usually as awful green goo on your handkerchief.

With a respiratory infection, the lungs are producing large quantities of mucus. They usually do that, partly to trap foreign particles from the air that fills the lungs. When you are ill, they're trying their darnedest to get whatever is making you ill out of your body. Ordinarily, little hairs called cilia move the mucus up toward the mouth, where you swallow it without realising it. When you are sick and there is lots of mucus around, the cilia can't move it fast enough, and the cough is
triggered.

When you cough long and hard, several things can happen. You can irritate the lining of your lungs because of the constant jostling and rushing of material over them. Your chest muscles can become strained from the constantly work. It is even said that coughing sufficiently hard can injure the ribs.

Prolonged or excessively violent coughing can produce an asthma attack, which in some cases can be life-threatening. For persons with heart disease, the stress of coughing in such a fashion may trigger a heart attack.

Most coughing spells are innocuous, and are what cough drops were designed for. If a cough continues for a period of days, or if it causes pain or wheezing, or if blood is present in the sputum (the goo that gets coughed up), you should be a doctor immediately.

The tendency of the lungs when a foreign body gets in is to engulf it in mucus. It's basically the same action you see in the mucus membranes of your nose. This is the mucus you expel when you cough. But actually, it could get more complicated than that. Bottom line is, coughing is normally a non-voluntary action of the body in response to "invaders" which range from bacteria to dust.
