It's always good to go with something sweet, something savory, something rich and creamy, and something crunchy.

I think a potluck is a good idea... my mother does them for her husband's work associates and they provide a ham, a turkey and drinks. Some folks bring desserts and others bring side dishes, some cooked and some bring things like rolls etc. (generally the single guys - lol)
If you're aiming to do the whole thing yourself... try things that are easy served as a buffet item. Ham, turkey, baked macaroni and cheese, crockpot full of green beans, perhaps a sweet potato casserole, rolls, butter, Christmas cookies, coffee and eggnog for dessert. You could have a simple raw veggie tray/dip and/or cheese and crackers before if you wanted.
If you're serving wine, do one red and one white - I would suggest Louis Jadot Beaujolais for the red... lightly chilled... and Fetzer Valley Oaks Gerwurztraminer for the white, well chilled, obviously... or maybe Bonny Doon Pacific Rim Riesling, or if you want to kick it up a notch, Trimbach Riesling. The Trimbach is the only one over $10 a bottle.
If you're having a party that does not include a sit-down dinner, make that ham on biscuits, turkey on dinner rolls, veggies/dip, a fruit platter, cheese/crackers, Christmas cookies and the same drinks along with sodas and bottled water :)

I suggest that instead of cooking all of the food yourself, that you do a potluck dinner. By doing a potluck dinner, all your guest will be required to bring at least one dish. As the host you would be required to cook the main dish - a stuffed turkey or Christmas ham.

basically the same as thanksgiving you just mix it up a bit like......deviled eggs, ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, deserts etc. usually you cook the ham with its glaze and get pineapple rings and stick them on the ham with tooth picks (make sure you get all the toothpicks out before you eat) and bake as the package says

at any gathering where there will be too many for a sit down dinner, remember the rule. something sweet, something salty, something warm, and something cold. if you're really going all out, a warm sweet, a warm salty, a cold sweet, and a cold salty.
