The Americans are banning it because it contains folate. Their laws state only breakfast cereals may have folate added to them. Their loss I guess.

As others have said it's true (and insane!). We can get Marmite but no Vegemite.

Here's just how crazy the law is: In 1999 by son had a job assignment in Australia and (not knowing about the ban) I got him to bring me back "as much Vegemite as you can carry". He had distributed a full case of jars throughout his luggage and on arrival in Amerika customs agent found the jars and *arrested* him for being a contraband smuggler! They did make a federal case of it and he plea bargained for a $10,000(US) fine which I paid for him . I have since (successfully) paid to have his arrest record expunged which is not easy for federal (political connections helped a bunch).

The US has declared vegimite to be unfit for human consumption because it has a high Folate content. Folate (in the US) is only permitted to be artificially added to Bread. I think its silly because there are no consiquences or health risks associated with overdosing on Folate. Not to mention that Vegimite is owned and manufactured by Kraft (an American company) Its just silly !

i think it has to do with some kind of weird nationalism more than it has to do folate.
the u.s. economy would go t*ts up if all "harmful" foods were banned(ex. mcdonald's, dorito's, coca-cola, budweiser...)

i hate to say it but the u.s. is becoming more of a clown show each day

OMG.... it's JUST vegemite...

Bad McDonalds before you ban vegemite!

I reckon the USA are just upset because vegemite is selling better than marmite ;-P

I'm not even sure what it is. I'm an American living in China, and I noticed that my doctor here, who happens to be from Australia, has a couple of jars in his office! If a doctor eats it, it must not be too harmful.
