I've never really wondered until a friend mentioned it. She wasn't exactly clear though. she said its not meaty and its not gooey and it doesn't have a flavor, well what exactly is it?

Soy Bean Curd.

It is kind of the consistency of scrambled eggs (firm anyways... and most dishes you will find it in), and really doesn't have a flavor, which is the beauty of it.

It is often marinated as needed to be added to any variety of meals, desserts, anything!

I like soy/ginger marinated extra-firm tofu grilled up with pineapple, bell peppers, and red onions!

But, you can also get silken tofu and blend it up instead of yogurt or ice cream for a smoothy.

Don't let the little white spongy block get to you... I think it's great, it's all in the preparation...

It is bean curd & it has to be fresh & cooked correctly in order to taste good. Most store bought tofu is a waste of time & money because it is not refridgerated correctly. This product will absorb the flavors of the other food & spices that it is cooked with!

A soy product. It's bland by itself, but it comes in different textures etc. You can use it as a substitute for pretty much anything, depending on how you prepare it.
It's used as meat, cheese, egg in baked products and scrambled... you get the point. It's rich in protein, calcium, and all that good stuff (that vegetarians and vegans sometimes miss) Here's a link... http://www.vrg.org/journal/vj99mar/99martofu.htm
