Suppose you were stranded on an island and ran out of bottled insulin. How would you get it? Could you extract it from wild animals? If there were no animals but other people on the island, would you kill them to get a supply of insulin? Could you extract insulin from a living person? How would you do it?

I believe if you had the know how you could make or extract your own insulin. Banting and Best did it with minimal equipment.
Suppose you had a prisoner who had killed your family. You had him tied up. Could you stick a hypo in him somewhere specific and draw out some insulin for yourself? Come on people, work with me. No self righteous martyr answers please.

If I am trying to survive in a chaotic environment, I am not "too far out there". I am asking you fellow DB's to think out of the box a little. Do you enjoy being a slave to a bottle of insulin and drug companies? Why is it "too far out there" to want to have a way to survive if my insulin vial is depleted? If it could be done, I would extract insulin from a living being, human or wild pig. How different is the concept of extracting insulin from the concept of transfusing blood?

I believe everyone has it in them to kill in order to survive...even if they don't think so when they are safe and sound on their computers in their warm house.

I don't think many people at all know how to extract insulin from anything but I do think all people, however mild mannered will kill to stay alive.

No way to answer question. You cannot extract insulin from the a live/dead person. You wouldn't have the equipement to get it or refine it. Insulin is a protein and would decompose pretty quickly under those conditions as well. Most insulin today is made from recombiant dna and is idential to human insulin. I don't believe beef and pork insulin are made anymore. No point making the more antigenic insulins when you can get actually get human insulin.

I think you're really asking, would you kill to extend your own life? No, I wouldn't kill my fellow castaways in order to give myself a few hours/days of life. Even if it were possible under the conditions you named.

No, Dr. I would not kill to live. If I were marooned, I would most likely die anyway....UNLESS I were on the right type of island with the following resources readily available:
Low fiber diets lead to magnesium deficiency causing insulin resistance and platelet aggregation. If you are on an island rich with vegetation, you would be able to eat that for fiber, and adequate nutrition. Examples of low glycemic foods are slow acting carbohydrates such as whole grains, and oranges.
Healthy fats are important to your health. Examples are avocado and coconut, which both act to decrease abnormalities of fatty acid metabolism, increase anti-oxidant function, and decrease insulin needs in the body. Animal fats are the most harmful because they increase insulin levels in the blood and clog arteries. Therefore killing an animal (or other living being) would only be in vain. You should instead eat small frequent meals to create a steady state of blood sugar in your body. Fermented foods prevent rapid rise of insulin, as a good tip to remember.
All of these things combined ultimately could very well keep you alive until rescue is upon you.
I hope this helped to answer your ponders. ;^)

I would not kill another human being just so I could live under any circumstances. However, as in the movie Alive, I could eat anybody who died along the way if it meant keeping me alive. I wouldn't like it, but I could do it.

Work with you? That would require ingesting some pretty potent hallucinogens. You are too far out there to work with.
