Types of Vegetarians

There are several vegetarian eating styles. Most vegetarians consider themselves lacto-ovo vegetarians, meaning they generally eat dairy and egg products, but do not include meat, poultry, or fish in their diet. Lacto vegetarians eliminate all animal foods except dairy products. Total vegetarians, or vegans (pronounced VEE-guns), eliminate all animal products. Individuals who occasionally eat meat, poultry, or fish consider themselves semi-vegetarian.

Most individuals who choose a vegetarian eating style want to be healthier and lower their risk for disease. Others are concerned about the environment and the cost of raising animals for food. Some do not agree with the inhumane treatment and killing of animals for food. There are also a number of individuals who choose vegetarian eating for religious purposes.

What does it matter what people call themselves? If they are cutting way down on meat, that's a good thing, right? And commercial eggs are infertile, so they are not animals. Can you really not tell the difference between milk and an animal part?

Let's encourage people to eat as far down the food chain as possible and not criticise them for not being as "pure" as we think they should be! It doesn't hurt me a bit if someone eats fish and calls himself a vegetarian - he's not forcing me to eat fish! Chill.

Because they want to have a clean conscience but can't be bothered to make the whole effort that is involved to become a true vegetarian (ie giving up all animal products).

It is a word that is very mis-used in my opinion. I think I am a vegetarian but have to tell people I'm vegan or else they think I eat fish, chicken, dairy products etc. Very strange!

vegans are the ones that don't eat any animal products at all. it depends on the degree some vegetarians will drink milk, eggs, fish they just don't like the taste of regular meat and the like. they realize that if you don't milk a cow it will end up hurting the cow because theyre udders become too engorged and it hurts! also a lot of them will only eat animal products that were free range and hormone free and all that good stuff.

People have different reasons for being vegetarian or vegan. You don't nessesarily have to care about animals to be vegetarian.
I don't like chewing on flesh. It disgusts me. I am vegetarian.
I eat eggs, milk, and cheese, though. So I'm not vegan.
I don't eat fish or chicken or anything though.
No meat at all.
I do try to have vegan eating habits, but I still eat eggs sometimes, so I can't technically call myself a vegan.

no no no...vegetarians don't eat things that animals don't normally produce. animals produce eggs and milk all on their own (and milk makes cheese) and you don't have to kill or harm the animal to get these things.
