I have a nasty cold, and when I start coughing I cannot stop. I have tried cold medicines, but they do not help this particular problem. Does anyone have any remedies?

Being a respiratory therapist, I see this a lot. Cough is often habitual meaning once it starts, that sometimes you can't stop. Your cough could be related to your cold, but I would go see a pulmonologist if this problem continues as coughing can be caused by a lot of other things than a cold, from cough-variant asthma to Chronic Bronchitis, there is a list a mile long. What works to stop a cough for one person is not necessarily going to do the same for you.

Best of Luck,

Ok, here's the deal! I had this same thing in camp, so ill give you some of my remedies:

1) Always have a cough drop at hand!
2) If you have asthma, find your inhaler right away. If you don't, breathe into a paper bag almost as if you are having a panic attack
3) Fill a pan with hot water and hold your head over it, let the steam clear you up
4) Drink lots of fluids to soothe your throat
5) Get a good nights sleep
6) Breathe deeply

Coughing is a necessary part of recovering from an illness, as it helps you expel mucus and irritants. However, your cough may simply prove to be a nuisance after a while. Your cough may be a "productive" cough that produces mucus, or a "dry" cough that's simply leftover from an illness. Depending on your circumstance, your approach toward treating your cough will differ

Try a cough drop. If that doesn't work, drink hot water mixed with honey and a little lemon juice.

The usual solution is to basically anesthatize the throat so that nothing tickles any more - that's your standard "cough suppressant".

Or, you can fill your cold remedy with alchohol - which doesn't make any problems go away, you just care less ;)

Have your MD prescribe tessalon pearls for this. (never bite but just swallow). Irritated coughs such as you described result in upper airway swelling and the condition will not improve until the cough is controlled.
