soup first then salad

For a traditional, formal dinner, soup comes first. Salad can either immediately follow the soup, or if you are serving an ethnic menu or following the customs of some European countries (like Italy), salad can follow your entree.

But HouseGoddess is right, there are exceptions to every rule. Your first and foremost duty as a hostess is to maximize the pleasant experience for your guests. So, if your menu involves some extraordinary soup course that will taste better served as a main dish, let your culinary sense rule. Second, it is always your perogative to be creative and do your own thing... although people do tend to respect you more when it is clear you know you are breaking with tradition, and are intentionally doing it with style!.

Buon appetito.

If the soup is going to be your main course, then serve the salad first. Usually at restaurants the soup gets served first, then the salad. If you are having more than just the two, my suggestion would be to serve your soup first, then your salad, reason: alot of people like to eat a salad with their meal.

It depends on which is more the main course in a meal like this. If the soup is heavier than the salad, serve salad first - If the salad is a hearty one like a grilled chicken or chef salad, then serve soup first.

Well, there is a popular idiom, "from soup to nuts" meaning the whole meal. So I guess you start with soup. Plus, the salad won't "cool down" too much while you eat the soup as it is pretty much at room temperature, but you would have to monitor the soup while you ate the salad.

So definitely soup.

It depends on the soup and salad. If the salad will have chicken or other ingredients that will make it real harty then it is the main course. If the soup is more stew like then it is the main course.

well toss up you can keep the soup warm on the stove while you serve the salad, but salad is already cold so. I am thinking though salad first and soup as entree.
