Only three:
First, accept the fact that you have it.
Second, conform to the change of lifestyle that this disease will require of you
Third, if you have trust in your doctor, follow his/her advise.
Then life will be much easier for you.

Oh how I hate people and their misconceptions of diabetes.
Firstly, (despite the type) Diabetes is not a disease, you can't catch it. It is genetic. It's a condition, one of which can be controlled by doing the following things:
Exercising regulary - at least half an hour daily.
Keeping the simple sugar in your diet to a minimum (thats sweets, chocolate etc)
Getting your heart checked on a regular basis
Going to see your consultant at the diabetes clinic.
Although you shouldn't be eating too many carbohydrates, you should be eating some to give you energy. Complicated carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread etc
There is absolutely no reason why you cant have a bit of cake or a piece of chocolate after a meal. Remember: All in moderation - and as long as you're checking your blood sugar level regularly and keeping it at a good level, then wheres the harm?

Can you get any books by the late diet doctor, Robert Atkins? He has some good advice about choosing which carbohydrates to eat, and which to avoid.
Diabetics need to be careful in selected carbohydrates in their diet.
Your father should avoid foods that are loaded with cerbohydrates. In other words, no sweetened pop, no candy, cookies, cake, pies or anything else with added sugar.
Also, lose weight and exercise. If he adopts a healthy lifestyle, he may be able to reduce or eliminate diabetic medicines, some of which have terrible side effects.

Its not an infection, its a lifelong condition. he needs to take meds daily and check his blood sugar content daily. Take him back to the doctor and get him to explain it all to the both of you.
