i read that you have to stop taking glucopage before surgery or there's a chance you could die, is this true?

also, since being on glucophage (about a month) i have not gotten my period. there is no chance of pregnancy as i have not been active. does this med delay your period? i'm not on any birth control and i'm on this med for pre diabetes. its already 2 weeks late and i'm just wondering what the deal is.

it was something about lowering your blood pressure so low during surgery that you could go into shock.

Glucophage is used when your body has a problem using the normal insulin you produce naturally. The reason they don't want you to take it before surgery is so you don't create too much insulin which could case your blood sugars to bottom out and possibly cause your death.

it's not the surgery that is the problem, it's the dye in IV's that is the problem. there can be an interaction between the dye and the glucophage that can cause renal problems and/or low blood pressure. You should make sure you have something on you that indicates that you're a diabetic and what medications you're taking, including glucophage. although it's possible that the glucophage could be interferring with your period, I doubt it. As a matter of fact it's commonly prescribed to people who have PCOS, polycystic ovaries, to help with insulin resistance...insulin resistance is part of Pre-diabetes and PCOS, diabetes, insulin resistance, all of these are connected. Many women have PCOS and diabetes. You should do a search on PCOS, look at some of the symptoms. Do a search for PCOS, see if you might have some of the symptoms. One of them is irregular or absent periods. You might just be showing some of the signs. And then it could be something completely different, but I think it's probably coincidence that you started taking the glucophage.

the risk with surgery is probably the risk of lactic acidosis if you get dehydrated or exposed to dye for radiographs etc. other risk could be of hypoglycemia since you have to fast for quite a few surgries, it improves insulin sensitivity in the body, should not delay the period, consult your doctor for the delayed period, good luck
