I ask because I've done all 3 of these things a fair few times on YA and gotten consistantly more abuse and thumbs down for defending vegetarianism than the incidents where I have actually been a bit rude.

Seems odd.

yugnovskyvich- as for "what business it is" of mine if people eat meat, well no more than what business it is of theirs if I don't. None of this is about what is who's business, we're on a public forum where opinions and views are meant to be exchanged so that's a totally meaningless point.

And for the record, yes I know Americans and Christians can "turn the tables"- my question is why they don't seem to get offended as often when I say negative things about them than meat eaters get when I stick up for veggies. READ THE QUESTION.

CowboyBill- First of all, you sound like a bit of a c**t. Second of all I'm not a tree hugger or a hippie, far from it. I don't know any veggies who are like that so you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. I'm guessing you're a Yank? People like you are the reason I have a problem with the country.

And finally, to clarify to everyone, I AM American (although I live in the UK now) and I was raised Christian so I'm not being small minded, I have educated opinions on these things.

Hi Princess,

Having a go at American isn't offensive, its a national sport

taking the p*** out of christians is too easy.

Defending vegetarians is just plain right, and your duty.

So, apologising or worrying about doing any of these 3 is the most offensive.

Carry on.

Either of the first two really, defending someone shouldn't be offensive because it's, well, defensive. I know that sounds horribly glib but offence and defence are kind of opposites.

I think the reason you get thumbs down for defending vegetarians though is that a majority of people seem to have something against vegetarians, so you're doing something unpopular. American and Christian bashing, whilst probably more offensive, are also more widely supported by the masses.

The most offensive must be taking the piss out of vegetarian christians who live in USA.

Seriously: In my opinion the makjority would give thumbs down on the issues that might offend them. So, USA citizens are most probably the largets single national group using this site (my guess), so the majority would be offended by having a go at Americans. Vegetarians forms a very small group in western society, so not many would be offended at statements against 'them'.

Most of us are willing to defend what we believe in, but not the rights of others.

Honestly, I think it's because of the 'holier than thou' attitude taken by the minority of vegetarians, I know the same could be said of US Citizens and Christians, but for some reason they tend to let it drop if someone has a go, whereas the minority of vegetarians won't.

I want to make the point very clear that I am talking about the minority of vegetarians, because I know a few and none of them have a problem with me eating meat - as long as I don't talk about what it used to be!

Also it's because the majority of people that eat meat are uneducated buffoons, that think vegetarians are freaks for not eating meat and just won't listen to any body elses opinion.

Defending vegetarians is probably the most offensive of the three. Heck, I've never met a vegetarian who didn't in some way look like the crypt keeper.

As far as "having a go at Americans" is concerned, the whole world does that so it's kinda boring. There's no fun in stating the obvious. Besides, most Americans claim to be not responsible for what their government does which always makes me wonder who the heck elected them.

And for Pete's sake, leave the Christians alone. There's nothing to be gained by that. We'll just turn the other cheek.

Hey Princess...
interesting to read the answers given in your question. So obviously touching nerves, here, aren't we.

I think the distilled version above me here from 'cowboy' bill kind puts it all into perspective (and we all know how they came by that nomenclature (cowboy, cowhand, cowPOKE) ... ).

For some reason there seems to be a vocal proportion who are afraid of vegetarians! They are also afraid of xtians and USians but there is something about seeing a vegetarian that is confronting for some people. Maybe it touches some deep subconscious connection that doesn't want to be acknowledged.
Maybe it panders to people's self righteousness and self-hatred to have a go at you for defending vegetarianism.

Maybe they realise on an unconscious level that by lambasting those who defend an alternative life-style they can forget or ignore that fact that they are the bought and chained property of the big machine - so they bark real loud to cover up the fact they are not in control.

Defending vegetarians is not offensive at all. Although a mountain man with a 1st grade education might think so LOL

I find "having a go" at Americans offensive because we are often blamed for what our government does. I personally have no control over what the govt does. I have not voted for the past 5 presidents!

As for the other..well...I won't say a thing because many of them tend to tick me off as well with thier rubbish.

Last winter my wife who is American and me the Frenchman who decided to go back to Church and to become veggies. After six months, we were shouting at everybody, blaming the Muslims for everything, lecturing the meat eaters and really thinking we were the creme de la creme. Then one day I looked at myself in the mirror and I thought I have lost my ironical and charming French style. We left the Church, went back to good Texan steaks and hoarded Bordeaux for 6 months. Now we are back to normal life, enjoying other people, treating meat eaters to our French wines and having fun. The only bad thing I did not do during this period was to havce a go at Americans but I am sure that if I had dared to have one my wife would have killed me....

Christians have worked on being tolorant for so long , they tend to take it on the chin even when they shouldn't. As for the anit-America deal that is old hat everyone think they hate us. Except of cousre we they need us to help them
Now on The Veggie thing ignorance can sometimes be over come by education on the subject.
