Most upscale gracery stores carry miso, as do most health food stores, and often the "Health" section of supermarkets. Miso comes as a paste, and you simply add it to hot water, and stir until it is disolved adequately. A normal sized bowl of miso soup probably requires a tablespoon of miso paste. Miso should never be boiled or added to boiling water, since that kills the healthful microorganisms (like in yogurt).

It is common to add a few vegetables and some tofu to miso soup, but this is not necessary, and is less traditional (we westerners think our soup has to be filled with all kinds of things, but that doesn't fit the more minimalist Japanese aesthetic).

I'd recommend that you buy a paste, rather than the powder ... better quality! More likely to just be a small portion of 'the real stuff' IYKWIM!

If you want to add something 'authentic' to it, but can't use a whole pack of tofu, buy konbu - seaweed. It's dried, and you only need to add a TINY bit because it swells up a lot! You might even get some with your sachet of miso..!

Yes you sure can. But here is a recipe for you anyway.

Preparation of miso soup
The Japanese make miso soup by cooking vegetables in dashi (stock made with seaweed and dried sardines), adding fried tofu cubes and adding miso (one tablespoon per serving). The miso soup is brought to boiling point and then enjoyed. In the Western world miso soup is mostly prepared from instant miso soup. This type of miso soup is not as delicious as one you would make yourself.

This is recipe for miso soup:

Ingredients:

1 Wakame piece of about 5 cm
1 medium carrot, cut is small cubes
600 ml water
1 medium onion, diced
2 tablespoon miso, dissolved in 2 tablespoon water
2 tablespoon parsley, chopped

Method :

Soak the Wakame in a bit of water for 10 minutes. Remove the middle rib and cut in small pieces
Boil the water in a pan and add the onions, carrots and Wakame. Simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add dissolved miso. Serve the miso soup immediately. Decorate with the parsley.

It’s important never to boil the soup after adding the miso because it will spoil the miso flavour.

Miso soup reduces risk of breast cancer!
According to Japanese researchers, eating three or more servings of Miso soup every day could cut women's risk of developing breast cancer. Miso soup contains isoflavones, chemicals which mimic the action of the female sex hormone oestrogen. Isoflavones are believed to prevent breast cancers developing by blocking the cancer-causing effects of oestrogen. The researchers concluded that consumption of miso soup and isoflavones, but not of soy foods, was inversely associated with the risk of breast cancer.

I work at a grocery store and people do it all the time. It grosses me out when they come up there with their nasty greasy trash that I actually have to touch. I think that they should just wait a few minutes before eating... or at least buy it first, eat it, and then do the rest of your shopping. I definitely have always wondered too though.

Definitely. It is in most supermarkets......look in the ethnic section, or the healthy section. It is available both ways, you'll have to find one you like by trying a few different ones.
