Well a possible problem could be pleurisy (related to the lungs) which is defined as:

inflammation of the pleura, with or without a liquid effusion in the pleural cavity, characterized by a dry cough and pain in the affected side.

Of course there are many variables, and it would be best to look up the rest of the symptoms to see if they are similar to what you are experiencing. But I know that it can seem like a vague pain that is difficult to pinpoint the diagnosis for. Hope this helps!

Well, chest pains can stem from many different problems. From inflammation of the chest cavity wall, to a more severe diagnosis of a heart attack. It is hard to determine what exactly could be causing your pain, without doing exams and asking a lot of questions. I know if your pain is definitely heart related from a heart attack, then the pain would feel like a crushing pain against the middle of your rib cage and radiate to your left arm. Your arm will start to tingle and go numb. Those are some of the warning signs of a heart attack.

I had severe chest pain on my right side - was diagnosed with costochrondritis - inflammation of the cartilage between the ribs. It's also called 'tse-tse syndrome' (not the sleeping sickness) It was VERYpainful - it came for no reason & left for no reason after about 2 years. In the meantime I couldn't lift anything heavier than a loaf of bread. I wore a TENS unit for pain control. I rented mine from a medical supply store with a prescription from my doctor. They were nice enough to apply the monthly rental toward purchase of this machine, so it got paid off that way.

I wore the 2 patches on my chest (stuck to the skin with sticky adhesive and were battery powered with the power unit clipped to my jeans.

It's technical name is "transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation' (hence TENS) -- gives a slight buzz which stimulates the nerves enough to produce endorphins which in turn reduce or eliminate the pain.

It was a very difficult 2 years. They first had me wear a holter monitor to rule out any heart problems. Then I had tried pain meds, acupuncture, cortisone, shots of novocaine directly into the site, and aspercreme which is a topical analgesic.

It has not recurred since then & I hope it never does. Ask your doctor about tse-tse syndrome or costochrondritis and see if that is what your problem is.

Sorry for your pain and the length of time it's been going on. Hopefully this information may help you - bring it to your doctor. It took my doctor much time in research to identify my condition.
