Sorry love, my dad phoned me one morning to say my grandad (93) was found unconscious, rushed to hospital and diagnosed with pneumonia. First the doctors said he had hours to live, then i had a phone call about 10am saying the doctor had given him an hour at the most....... The hospital is an hour from where i live so we rushed there - as i was walking through the front doors my dad met me and told me he had gone.............exactly an hour after he had last called me. Whatever the doctors tell you, believe them as they see this so often in the elderly......

I'll be thinking of you, just remember she has had a longer life than many others who pass on in their 60's & 70's.

Please see the webpages for more details on Pneumonia. Please note that viral pneumonia has no effective cure and pneumonia caused by certain strains of bacteria have became drug resistant. In addition, Hospital-acquired pneumonia, also called nosocomial pneumonia, is pneumonia acquired during or after hospitalization for another illness or procedure. Senior citizens are vulnerable to these infections. It is very difficult to treat these infections even at a higher cost and the mortality rate is higher. There are several types of pneumonia. It is difficult to give a reply without knowing the details of medical records and the actual condition of the patient.

So sorry to hear about your poor mum.

unfortunately given her age and her weight she is probably unlikely to be strong enough to fight such a nasty infection as pneumonia which is deep seated in the lungs and can be hard to treat.

morphine is given to relieve discomfort and make her mmore comfortable however it can also have an effect of suppressing the respiratory system so wont help her recovery.

Once again very sorry xxxx

Hi im sorry but when doctors give a person a few days to live then it will happen, i know people say prepare yourself but no one is ever prepared. Just make sure she is comfprtable and can be and that she has her grandma around. I lost my nana this January to pneumonia we got told it had come back and she only had a few hours to live. But wheather they give you a long or short time for them it is just as bad. But there is nothing we can do to stop death, just try and be prepared and comfort your family memebers and spend as much time with them as you can.

Morphine is often given as a palliative measure, to help make a patient more comfortable as well as to ease pain.
Your mother may be nearing the end of her life.

My thoughts are with you and your family.

Sadly if she has been given 'days to live' then death would be imminent.

However the medical staff looking after your mother are the best people to ask.

im so sorry to hear that given her age i think you should prepare for the worse, i would make sure your with her as much as possible over the next few days and just make sure she is as comfortable as possible, she must be in a lot of pain if she is on morphine and noone wants to see someone suffer like that, as much as you want her to hang on in there you must think what would be kinder for her, once again sorry.

My father was diagnosed with the same .
He was given morphine and we were told he`d die within 6 hours.
I stayed awake with him for 44 hours without sleep.
The doctors told us he would only last for 6 hours .
It was peaceful ,he looked as though he was sleeping.
Before the morphine ,he was scared ,choking and gasping for breath.
