Diabetic neuropathy happens when you have too much sugar in your blood over fairly prolonged periods of time, it doesn't occur generally on one off sugar highs.

The best way I know how to explain it is, if you imagine a T-shirt or a blouse getting covered in a sugary solution. They get very sticky and get stiffer.
The same thing is happening to your blood cells, they get sticky and stiff, they don't bend and flow as they should. When this happens, instead of the nice bendy bloods cells flowing through capillaries easily, they bump into the walls causing damage and can get stuck blocking smaller capillaries and even cause plaques and blocking bigger arteries eventually.
Nerve damage and loss of feeling to extremities can happen, which is why diabetics must be very watchful of their feet.
Unfortunately there are nerves and capillaries all over the body so many areas can be affected by runaway blood sugars, like eyes, skin, etc.
Neuropathy just means nerve damage.

It is best treated before it happens, i.e keeping your blood sugars with in exceptable limits.
Extensive nerve damage may not be reversible.

If your sugars in the right levels, a diabetic can live a very healthy long life with very little problems the same as anyone else, you just have to look after yourself abit more.

think of glazed arteries!!!
All that sugar in your blood makes your arteries get glazed and little by little there's less blood flow into the smaller blood vessels of your body, therefore cells die. Sometimes the cells called "nerves" die and your ability to feel decreases.
Diabetic neuropathy is a condition in which your nerve endings get damaged and your feeling of sense decreases. That's why you need to be very carefull not to walk bare foot or something that will lead to an injury/ wound. Remember that these people also have poor circulation so the blood components, the white blood cells and platelets, etc, can get to that wound as well making your ability to fight it less and you can get very serious complications.
Another nerve endings that get damaged are the ones in the eyes and ear causing loss of those senses. Therefore not only take care of your sugar levels but also your feet and exercising helps circulation.

This is a SERIOUS sign of OUT OF CONTROL DIABETES. LOSE WEIGHT since most diabetics are over weight, not all just most.

Read everything on the illness and follow the directions. EAT RIGHT. High protein and low sugar, low or almost NO starches.Lots of no starch green veggies.

Tingling and numbness in the fingers and toes and feet are the beginning symptoms.

After that it's wheel chairs and amputation..

We have an in-law in our family that weighs 350 and simply doesn't try to avoid bad foods.
She now has NO feeling below her knees.
Presently lives alone but won't be able to for much longer. Then the burden falls to her only daughter and my son to take care of someone who refused to take care of themselves.

Good Luck and if it's you take care of yourself.

It is damage to the nerves due to poor circulation from the blood being too thick to flow properly through the smallest blood vessels. It is treated with a few different medications and better control of the diabetes.
