0xygen the machine where her blood pressure is reading sometimes 96-100 percent is this bad? how are they going to wean her off the (vent trac) how long does that usually take?does that mean she is doing 40 percent oxygen on her own?

your mom is on 60% oxygen, which is pretty high. hopefully they can get that number down to about 40%-30%. anything over 50% o2 can actually damage the lung if on for a long period of time. that 96-100 percent your seeing is not her blood pressure it's her 02 saturation, which is reading in the normal range.you will know when they start weaning when they get the o2 down, the md will give what we call weaning parameters to see how your mom will do off the ventilator. this will probably take awhile because she is on 60% o2. was she intubated first oor did she start of with a trach? why is she on a vent? these will also determine how long it will take to wean her. hope it help, oh by the way i'm a icu nurse

She is on the vent with 60% oxygen with sats of 96-100%. The amount of oxygen she is on is a little on the high side, but she appears to be oxygenation well. No, she is not breathing 40% on her own. She is only getting the % that is being delivered by the ventilator. The is no magic number of days to tell when she will come off the vent. Her coming off depends on the condition of her lungs and how strong her respiratory muscles are, her overall condition and the problem which brought her into the hospital in the first place. Talk to her pulmonologist(he/she is the one who is managing the vent.). The quicker she comes off the better. The longer they stay on the harder it is to come off and more complications can ensue.

i'm not a respiratory therapist but a nurse in trauma icu...

a reading of 96-100% O2 is good-that's the range you want it to stay in, if she drops below 93% then a call to the doctor should be made.

the 60 is the amount of oxygen needed to support your mother's breathing. in order to find out if she's breathing on her own look at the RATE she is set at and how many respirations she is actually taking (for example if her rate is set at 14 breaths per minute on the vent and her monitor says she is breathing 20 breaths per minute then your mom is breathing on her own and not having the vent do it for her entirely)

to wean her, they will slowly start decreasing her FIO2 down from 60% to where she no longer needs it. how long this take will all depend on how well she is recovering and how often she is breathing on her own....

60 means that she is breathing well around her trach, that's alot after major surgery and the 96-100 percent oxygen is excellent! That's how much oxygen she is creating in her own blood! I'm sorry that you are going through this, but it sounds to me like your Mom is doing fabulous!
