I had a supervisor at work who was relatively cool at first. Then he decided to quit taking care of himself. He would not eat breakfast, and brag about it. He'd "forget" to take his insulin, and brag about it. He even had a few diabetic seizures. The weird thing about it was it seemed like he didn't take care of himself on purpose. It was like he wanted attention. Why would someone do that? I've known other diabetics who are amazing at taking care of themselves. Also, if this guy wasn't taking care of himself, he'd turn into a huge jerk.

I'm not saying all diabetics are like this. If you read the entire question, I did in fact say I know diabetics who are amazing at taking care of themselves.

YES, I DO. I WAS ONCE LIKE THIS MYSELF, IT COST ME A 6 YEAR MARRIAGE. THE STRESS OF BEING DIABETIC AND BEING DIFFERENT SINCE THE AGE OF NINE JUST WORE ME DOWN TO THE POINT OF NOT GIVING A DAMN. IT WAS LIKE I ALMOST WILLED MYSELF TO DIE. I WOULDN'T WISH DIABETES ON MY WORST ENEMY - THAT'S HOW BAD THE DISEASE IS. BUT I LOOK AT IT LIKE THIS NOW - AT LEAST I LIVE IN A TIME NOW WHERE YOU CAN LIVE WITH DIABETES AND NOT HAVE TO STARVE MYSELF TO TRY TO CONTROL IT. I HAVE AN INSULIN PUMP NOW AND INSURANCE. NOT ONLY DID THE WORRY OF DIABETES AFFECT MY MOOD, BUT SO DID THE WORRY OF NEEDING MEDICINE THAT COULD NOT AFFORD. SO YES DIABETES IS POSS. TO TAKE CARE OF, BUT IT ALSO COMES WITH A LOT OF UNDER LYING ISSUES. TRY TALKING TO YOUR FRIEND PERSON TO PERSON. USUALLY DIABETES IS NOT THE ONLY ISSUE CAUSING THE MISS TREATING OF THE PERSONS OWN SELF.

Well... I knew a diabetic girl at my work who acts kind of strange, but not like that. I mean, she walks around all gloomy and depressed acting. She whines about every little possible thing. She takes breaks more than anyone else.... to go SMOKE. Then she complains whenever someone gets a promotion and she doesn't because she's been there longer......

Please don't judge all diabetics based on these people. Yes, I know people like that. They drive me crazy. They whine about how bad their diabetes is, then do nothing about it.

I have diabetes. I wear a pump. I test 10 times a day. I have great control. It is possible.

you should print some pages about how to manage diabetis for him.... this is a disease that takes alot out of you..... try to be nice to him and tell him you are here to help.... he needs a shoulder. I have had this disease for 35 years, and yes, it is exhausting. Be patient with him.
